Try GoldWave for free (eventually you have to pay a small amount.) It has a noise-reduction filter. A bit tricky to use at first, but relatively easy once you get the hang of it. I find it difficult to get really clean sound without the wanted sounds sounding tinny. It seems best to do a little at a time. Also, best to use the clipboard/memory option. Select a section which has hiss but no other sounds. GoldWave then filters just that sound, and you dose how deeply.

There is a much cheaper solution to noise reduction than buying Sony’s Noise Reduction. For $40 get GoldWave which includes a noise reduction filter. (You can try a fully working version for free for a long time before you have to pay the $40.) I have not used Sony’s and I would hope that at many times the price it is better. Note that GoldWave can stand as a good substitute for both SoundForge and the Noise Reduction package. As for any of these efforts, it often takes many passes reducing just a little the background noise to get to a place you want to be. None of these filters substitutes for getting good sound to begin with.
To stay within Vegas, you have to go the expensive route. However, Vegas will recognize GoldWave and you can (under options I think) designate it as your primary sound editor. Then it works exactly like SoundForge. Right click on an audio clip and you can copy it into Goldwave, then save it back to Vegas once you’ve doctored the clip. So in this sense it does work “within” Vegas.

I’ve been VERY pleased with AVG. The only complaint I can make is that when it is running a scheduled scan, it pretty much takes over the computer — so I schedule while I’m eating lunch.

I don’t understand why that link doesn’t work. You’re right. It doesn’t. Try this: go here: https://www.fox.uwc.edu/iit/medialab/, then click on “Tutorials and Tips” in the left pane; then scroll to the bottom, “Video Editing” and select “Basic Cutting in Vegas”. (Note that the final page you reach will have exactly the same html address as my original link.)

Thanks, guys, for the input. By the way, for those like me who are trimmer challenged, there’s a pretty good basic intro/tutorial to Trimmer in the Media Lab page of the U. of Wisconsin: https://www.fox.uwc.edu/iit/medialab/tutorials/video/vegas-basiccutting.html. At least ONE university is teaching Vegas instead of FCP or something else.

As stated above, color curves. Also the four sliders at the bottom of Color Corrector: Saturation / Gamma / Gain / Offset.
You could also download the free 6 color corrector at: https://www.moosehill.se/index.php?page=vegas/6cc.php
and then play with individual colors — very powerful.Rick
