Sampling to remove hiss in Vegas/Sound Forge
Posted by Grant on June 10, 2006 at 1:05 pmHi,I would like to know how to remove noise from problematic audio, in Sound Forge. I am really enjoying editing in Vegas & would love to use Sound forge more. I hope this is an appropriate forum. I cannot find a SF forum on this site.
Does anyone know how to sample the background noisy bit of an audio file between the words, then apply a filter in SF that concentrates on removing that noise, minimising the effect on the other sounds in the track such as spoken words ? Or perhapes an appropriate plug in aside from the sony noise reduction one.

June 10, 2006 at 1:18 pmYou should really try the Noise Reduction application that Sony sells–You can find it on their site. Its pretty good but will cost you some money.

June 10, 2006 at 4:11 pmTry GoldWave for free (eventually you have to pay a small amount.) It has a noise-reduction filter. A bit tricky to use at first, but relatively easy once you get the hang of it. I find it difficult to get really clean sound without the wanted sounds sounding tinny. It seems best to do a little at a time. Also, best to use the clipboard/memory option. Select a section which has hiss but no other sounds. GoldWave then filters just that sound, and you dose how deeply.

June 10, 2006 at 5:07 pmYou might also try VEGAS>NON REALTIME FX goto TRACK EQ and use #1-pull down and to the right until the vocal changes then back off a bit. This will work on noises that aren’t TOO bad. Plus if it doesn’t work you can revert back to th eoriginal take in Vegas and all you’ve lost is a little time.

June 11, 2006 at 1:06 amI do not have/tried Sound Forge but have used Audacity (a free sound editing program) to remove noise quite successfully. As everyone else has said though, a little at a time.

June 12, 2006 at 7:00 amThanks for your responses. I have sound reduction tools including the Sony noise reduction.
I am not looking for a noise reduction tool, though I am open to trying them all, as they also may help.I would like to know how to sample a particular sound & remove that sound a little or a lot.
I use a tool called DV ART restoration where I can sample any part of an audio track then remove that part totally or mildly through the whole audio clip, while evaluating how much it will adversely effect the voice. So I sample some hiss between the words then apply that sample to the whole clip. I was hoping there is a way to do this in Sound Forge or if there is a plug in for it.

June 12, 2006 at 9:18 pmSorry missed the post this far down. In Noise Reduction sample a section of the hiss between words, get the noise sample, then run NR thru the audio. It will remove the hiss whereever it hits it on the frequency. If you still need further reduction then do it again but be careful as you can easily change the pitch of the voice.
NR is a pretty simple program and one of the best for doing what its called.

June 13, 2006 at 4:53 pmopen the Vegas project-hightlite a portion of the audio track that has both voice and hiss-copy into NR in NR Get Noise Print or whatever they call it in NR and that should get you going on the correct path.
(I’m guessing on NR as I use a different NR program but they all work in pretty much the same method)

June 13, 2006 at 10:16 pmThanks Don, I will delve into it more. What NR program do you use?
