Go with Richard’s recommendation. You already have the lenses. The Nikon D7000 is the way to go.

Zevie, after reading your post very carefully, I think the best answer for you is to use the Canon Vixia for all of your shooting. It will give you a consistent look and using one camera will be much easier for you. I would go with the 30P setting. That will give you a good compromise between the “cinema” look and a smoother moving image. The shallow depth of field of a larger sensor is eliminated but I believe your audience will be very happy with the quality of the image nevertheless.

    Good luck

Once you’ve verified the transfer using Clip Browser, it seems to me you’d be good to go. I don’t think there is a reason to slow down your process by using Clip Browser after that. Also, for my workflow, it seems more important to redundantly back up the re-wrapped MOVs than the BPAV.

Bob, once you’ve used Clip Browser to transfer from the SxS to the firewire drive, I don’t see the need to use it again. Just transfer the BPAV from the firewire drive to wherever you want it. You’ll also have a backup of the files as re-wrapped MOVs so your method really seems like quite an overkill.

Yes. As it is zoomed through it’s range, it maintains the aperture. You can set and change any aperture you desire.

The 17-55mm lens is equivalent to an “L” series lens. This is Canon’s top of the line.
The reason it isn’t branded an “L” series is because it’s an APC lens.
It has a constant 2.8 aperture which is very important for video.

    good luck

  • After my last post concerning the G-Mini, I thought it would be appropriate to further comment on G-Tech products. I’ve used their G-Speed RAID and G-Drives for years and they’ve been very reliable. I wouldn’t hesitate recommending them to anyone.

  • I’ve used many G-Drive Minis over the past few years. Unfortunately I’ve had three of them crash. The form factor is great, but find them too unreliable. I’ve had pretty good luck with the LaCie Rugged drives.

Robert, the scenario mentioned above assumes that the outside color temperature is 5600K. This may not be the case. On a cloudy day, for instance, the color will be bluer, sometimes a lot bluer. The best thing to do is get an accurate white balance and adjust from there. So, if the white balance you get is, say, 6300K, set the preset slightly higher than that to achieve a warmer image. Of course, your white balance will probably change throughout the event.
