That’s sounds logical. Unfortunate, but logical. I wonder what the flange depth of the F3 is though.

For me, changing the shutter speed is not a suitable solution. It will drastically change the look and feel of the image. That only leaves using either a matte box or screw-on ND filter. That means this camera (if, in fact, it really does not have internal ND) forces you to put additional glass in front of your lens. That’s pretty lame just to be able to expose properly for exterior daylight.

Hopefully someone can shed some light on this…But not too much light.

Oh, and it does a very good job of removing the IR pollution.

John, I don’t think there is any light loss. If there is, it’s negligible. As far as color, I never noticed any difference until I did a comparison with and without the filter. There is some chroma desaturation and I would say that the image is slightly greener. These are very, very small amounts and its never been an issue for me. Your best bet would be to try it yourself and see if it’s OK for you.

I use the B&W Infrared/UV #486. You’ll need the IR cut. It’s not inexpensive, but it’s good glass.

why didnt it recognize the hoodman??

Not sure why it no longer recognizes the Hoodman adapter.

have you tried the adaptors out there for the 3 to help balance on your shoulder?

    I haven’t tried the adapters because I’m OK hand-holding the camera as-is.

how is the zoom on your 3? i hear its luck of the draw, some are real jerky and not smooth and some are good

My zoom is not that great. I’d imagine the EX1 has the same issues. Can’t really get a nice “feathered” zoom and I can only go as low as 4 on the zoom setting

Also, you’ll be fine with the SxS adaptors. I’ve used Hoodman, MxM and MxR. I do have a Hoodman that the camera no longer recognizes, but I’ve never had a problem while shooting. Class 10 SDHC cards from San
Disk and Transcend have worked fine for me.

Shooting handheld with the EX3, while not ideal, is very doable. Full shoulder mounting would be better, but then you’ld have to move up to the PMW-320 and pay more for the camera itself and batteries. The EX3 will still give you four points of contact: the shoulder pad, cheek pad, hand grip and lens. Adjusting the hand grip to a comfortable angle is very helpful. I can shoot handheld for hours. The viewfinder is definitely worth it over the EX1R.

Bob, I have the Sony VCL-EX0877 0.8x Wide Angle Lens Adapter and it works great. It costs $494.95 at B&H. It gives you 20% wider coverage with very little distortion and full zoom through capability. Resolution is very good over the entire frame.
