Well, you could use WMV with many Macs now supporting WMV with add ons. Possibly MP4? Not sure…can WMV on a PC playback MP4 movies?
You’re right about MPEG 1…some limitations in frame sizes.

I would probably take a drive down there and talk to some of the coordinators. I think you will get a better idea of who they are and what objectives they have for their participants. I also believe that mentoring is one of the best ways we professionals can contribute our time. Anyone can walk in a fun run or help out at the local food bank, but we have a unique set of skills that can point a person in a new exciting direction. If you are committed to giving your time, you should at least feel that the organization is willing to do the same in making sure you get the support from them and that the program has some guidelines and stated objectives.
Go have a talk with them.

Compressor is a clunker. Absolutely needs a facelift. Too many windows and a clunksville window where you drop the files. Drop 15 files and have a nice wait. Why? I haven’t done anything yet!
I agree that sometimes settings don’t stick. You come back to the tab you were in before and the settings are magically what they were BEFORE you changed them.
I have no idea why anyone defends that program. Most unlike-a-Mac experience I have on a daily basis and Apple is responsible for the app! Please. Oh, and it’s Pro!
BitVice 2.3 can batch, but is Intel and Leopard only. fast clean MPEG2 encodes. And, hey, it’s written in Sweden!

It seems that the discussion on what to do with the P2 original footage is still in full swing, with no solution rising to the top as the defacto standard. What’s long term, what’s fast, what will be future proof? Well, I was outputting station dubs to Betacam, an old analog format, back in the mid 1990s. i can still play those tapes today. We still output to Betacam today for station dubs in our market.
So what’s wrong with outputting the raw footage to a DVCProHD tape? It will sit on the shelf nicely until you need it. It will last a long, long time, and making a dub is easy enough and pretty cost effective. Having a deck will allow you to archive your projects to tape as well so you can make dubs from the tape, rather than having to restore a file and then convert it to whatever format.
The post workflow is ok, but I think this is one new format that even the manufacturers didn’t put much thought into what would happen after the shot was captured to the media card. The options become dramatically exponential the farther from the card you get.

With a MacBook pro what is the speed offloading using a PCMCIA to Express 34 adapter? Could dump the Contents folder directly to the internal hard drive, and when it is done copy it to a Firewire drive from there. But going straight from the card thru the adapter and onto the interal drive….how does that sound for performance?

One thing about disk Warrior, I too run it about every other month on all my drives, plus all the drives in the facility. But here’s the deal. First i will run Apple’s Disk Utility just to do a quick check and make sure Apple says the drive is fine. If I have to I run Apple’s utility until it comes up with no errors, just a green ok.
Then I run disk Warrior. But here’s the deal. If you get any red errors and choose to fix them, you must run it again, and again, and again until you don’t get any more errors. some errors are more problematic and it can fix them, but once fixed, it needs another pass to clean up the lesser problems etc.
I love the app and have never had a gaff because of it. Has always kept our drives humming as they should.

We had this issue with two shoots. In both cases the “Remove Advanced Pulldown” was checked and it should NOT have been. In both cases they shot 720p60. By removing the pulldown, it effectively removed frames that we needed! We could only go back and re-batch import with the checkbox off. This gave us the silky smooth 60p we needed to slo mo a bunch of shots.
And on another recent shoot, we got clips that were shot 720p60 and were already converted with the Remove Pulldown checked, we were given a drive with just .mov clips, and the cards were erased. The shoot is now unusable.
Hate that default checkbox. Should not be hidden in a menu. It should be right there in the window.

Boy, I didn’t think reverse telecine in Compressor would work, but lo and behold, it all worked beautifully.
Got that old pesky 1080i 24p footage into 1080 23.98 ProRes HQ in no time.
