Whoa friggin nelly! You cannot expect anyone in the corporate world to download software and install it on enterprise systems. IT simply doesn’t allow it most of the time. If their IT has installed Wind Media Player, then spend the $49 and encode all the WMVs you want. It is a very poor business decision to NOT provide a solution for your clients (meaning you have the solution, not THEY have to go get it!)

This will come up again with another client. Corporate clients want Windows Media even if you think they should just download a player. Are you a professional? Then get the tools that allow you to look like a professional and deliver what they ask for.

Sorry, but asking them to download software is NOT the solution here, and pretty much everyone who has a Mac has QT Pro and Flip4Mac Pro.

Could be, but once I changed the preset to 4:3 my clips passed.

Perhaps could have stayed same as source as well.

    FYI,

In Madison Wi about $500-1000 for the 1 minute piece, not including VO if needed.

For the 10 second animation maybe about the same if they want it pretty layered. But there are simpler approaches to this so I might give the same range.

Hey Joe…tell me this. If you drag a clip into a new sequence and you tell FCP to match the footage settings, what do the sequence settings look like? Is it an XDCAM sequence?

    Curious,

April 12, 2009 at 2:49 am in reply to: DVCPRO HD Archive Question

Right off the timeline in FCP simply Export Quicktime Movie and check the Make Self-Contained box. That will do it.

Why not output it to DVCProHD tape, which would also be a clean archive.

April 9, 2009 at 12:27 am in reply to: JVC GY-HM700UXT vs SONY EX-3

We are leaning toward the 700 because of the workflow from media to hard drives to editing. Including archiving. with the Sony we have to copy the original files then batch transfer, creating new media and have two copies of everything. The JVC looks very good, and we were not really considering a JVC product until this model showed up! Then, throw in a 100 as a second camera and we’re all set.

March 18, 2009 at 1:46 am in reply to: Sticking to rates when you’re poor and desperagte

I’m all about a solution. Yes, like Bob says, keep pounding the pavement for those new clients. But for now, for this client, why not tell her that your rate is going to be $300 for the shoot. That includes you, your gear and tape stock. Ask her if she will pay you $150 before the shoot and the remaining $150 two weeks after the seminar.

If you had a small DVD duplicator and an inkjet disk printer, you could offer to make 50 copies or so right after the edit. In other words, sometimes it takes selling MORE than they asked for to make the sale, once they see how much you bring to the table.

She says it’s a lockoff. You tell her that you have a wireless mic that she will wear for excellent sound, and you will follow her on the stage so you don’t miss any of the action. You will get there early and shoot some crowd shots from the front, people walking in etc so she can cut that as an opener etc.

She will not want to shoot with anyone else!

  • I’m not so sure I would go that far. It does seem that today if you plan on shooting with a Red camera that you will post and deliver in HD. Still, there might be times when everything is posted HD and then final output ends up on DVD or SD Station dubs.

I do think that in this case cutting everything at 29.97 1080p would be ideal. Convert your Red footage to 29.97 in compressor. If DVD is the end result, use a compressor like DVCProHD or PreRez.

Daniel’s statement is not wrong but he forgets that we used to shoot with very expensive film and downconvert everything to Beta SP for the edit. Then cut it at AVR77 and output back to Beta SP. Ouch!

So shooting with the Red is a big plus, but I also agree that getting those clips to 29.97 in some flavor of HD and upconverting the SD using the Kona 3 will give you the least headaches in post.

    Good luck,

March 8, 2009 at 4:23 pm in reply to: Recession and Video Production

Not sure it has been derailed. Joel was asking about the recession and how we are coping and what we might be doing different. Employees is a biggie. I was going to say that in our industry a business plan looks a little different than a widget manufacturer. We strive to find talent, people with creative spark, people who do have passion. Not sure why the Orphanage closed doors. Maybe it was just a good time to wind it down. Maybe the end of the really big budgets did have an impact on highly paid talent. It’s a real challenge.

We want to pay our top talent the most we can, but we have many numbers to juggle as well as predicting the future…what will changes in equipment and software mean to our business model? What is the competition up to? Are my employees satisfied with their work and environment?

I also live in a small midwestern town and so far so good. I don’t think that discussing our employees passion for their work is going to derail this thread about working through a recession. I think we need our employees to have that passion through the tough times….once it’s gone so are they.

March 8, 2009 at 4:06 pm in reply to: How to Protect a new Blog Show Idea

I would suggest that you roll it out and get out in front. for every idea there are copycats. Can you say import cars?

But if you can get a small storehouse of video in the can and ready to roll, initiate the show online, get it out everywhere on the web, do local press releases, contact the people you want to attract to the site, get all your family and friends to log on and keep the traffic moving and get that head start.

After that keep delivering on your idea, keep impressing the audience and hope that the idea you had is as appealing to your audience as you think it is.

But honestly, if someone takes the idea and makes it better in some way, there isn’t much you can do about it. Just do the best you can and go forward confidently.
