JVC GY-HM700UXT VERSUS SONY EX-3. Discuss?

I am also interested in this debate. We are looking to buy a camera soon, and recently demoed the JVC-200, since the 700 wasn’t in yet. But the rep did tell us all about it. I think it comes down to a few key points, and why I am leaning towards the 700.
1. The 700 simply looks more professional, and it has a shoulder mount, which makes handheld look better and easier.
2.The 700 costs about $2000 more, but the Sony SxS cards are going for $800 for 16GB, while a SDHC card is about $25 for 16GB. Of course, there is a sacrifice. The SDHC take about 5 times as long to import, but if you use FCP, you can edit straight from the card. In the end, by the time you get the camera and enough cards to work, you are at about the same price.
So far, I am leaning to the 700, but I am really interested in getting my hands on it and trying it out. I would also like to hear everyone elses thoughts. Thanks for starting the discussion Pat.

The form factor of the JVC is unbeatable! The Sony EX3 will be better in in low light and has the obvious resolution win.
With the new 1/2′ Letus Relay coming soon, the EX3 will be a serious contender. I spoke with Dennis Wood at Cinevate and he said it’s almost 100% that 1/3′ Relays are coming very soon. These relays allow these cameras to use 35mm lenses without the crappy stock lens as the relay, awesome.
As the early reviews state, the new HM700 is a little sharper than the HD200 series was, and maybe a tad bit better in low light, but with a drastically better workflow.
Both cameras appear to be winners but true testing will be the final judge.

The 700 has CCD not CMOS – could be an issue to some. there are some rez charts on another site.

We are leaning toward the 700 because of the workflow from media to hard drives to editing. Including archiving. with the Sony we have to copy the original files then batch transfer, creating new media and have two copies of everything. The JVC looks very good, and we were not really considering a JVC product until this model showed up! Then, throw in a 100 as a second camera and we’re all set.

Aside from the obvious 1/3″ vs 1/2″ sensor issue, this camera seems to have it all except one key feature – genlock.

Good to hear this is conv is still going! I read on another forum that the EX3 will soon have 2/3″… is this true? If so, can someone point me to a link from Sony? I’d like to read more. Also, can you explain more on the 1/2″ Letus relay? What exactly is that, and how does it affect the image?

I know the JVC 250 is the same camera as the 200, but with genlock and full studio controls. I think they will be coming out with a 750, that is the same camera, but with all the studio controls.

If they do release a 750 with full studio controls it will be a very strong camera choice. We are test driving the 700 and Ex-3 next week so I am really eager to A/B these cams.

The relay will allow you to use 35mm adaptors without the fujinon or canon 1/3 lens.
The outcome is a smaller rig and more resolution.
JVC’s PL Mount adaptor is cool but you only get 16mm DoF. They cost about the same.
