I’m curious what deliverable format will become a standard. HDCAM has been an HD deliverable for network shows for a long time and Extreme Reach does not do full length programming. The file format deliverables are all over the map.

We need an organization (SMTPE?) to come up with standards for file deliveries…..how much slate, bars, black etc. Everyone wants something different. It’s going to get worse with 4k. Is there even a 4k tape delverable?

March 31, 2014 at 12:12 am in reply to: H.264 files still too big!

YOu can also just try exporting the ProRes file out of Quicktime 7 Pro. Open the file and choose Export. In the dialog choose h264. In settings there is a box on the right that allows you to restrict the bitrate. Type in 1100 kbps. Hit ok. Click the Size button and choose 832 x 468. This size/bitrate combo will net pretty good results on such a long clip. Finally under audio, decide if you NEED it to be stereo….where will people watch it really? Just a laptop etc? Then choose 80kbps and choose Mono audio. This is the equivalent of 160kbps Stereo.

Want to make your life really simple? Generate a 1 minute clip from your entire video in ProRes and do some tests on just the one minute. Once you have the quality and frame size you can live with look at the file size of the one minute clip and multiply it by 85. That will be the file size of the final encode.

March 29, 2014 at 10:29 pm in reply to: NAB 2014 advice

I was wondering when Bob would chime in about NAB….always a good read.

However, if you also do production work, Central Hall is full of cool little gadgets and inventions that are just too cool. I have to pull double duty so comfy shoes are good advice.

Hope to run into you this year again, Bob.

March 21, 2014 at 8:17 pm in reply to: Need REAL Stock Footage Resource

I now cringe if a project has more than two stock shots….way too much up in the air that you can’t control. Always a compromise. For $3000 I don’t think we would get 20 shots in a day unless they were in the same space without a big company move, but I agree that using primarily stock to the tune of 20 shots is a bad idea all around to sell a brand.

I’ll be there Monday thru Thursday. Renting a Harley Heritage Softail so getting out and seeing some sights is in the agenda as well.

And I assume that is also per seat, unlike CC which technically is two seats per subscription, per se.

But I doubt it is $399 with no additional subscription cost ever.

If it is, that is great, but no way will Adobe buy that idea. However, give me a price, Adobe, that I pay now and whenever I choose to lapse my CC subscription I get to “perpetualize” the current version I have (after updating the whole thing!). That would not put my most current projects in jeopardy with clients. My projects versions would be the same as my software version.

Now we are getting somewhere…..wait, this isn’t the Adobe CC forum!

They are taking over the Universe…of plug-ins, that is.

I assume that if you pay the $399 lifetime up front you still have to pay the $99 per year for the new stuff, but anything you have to date with your subscription is perpetual.

HEY ADOBE, this is a GREAT model! Let’s get this thing done….by NAB please. I’ll give you my credit card at NAB for a lifetime CC (perpetual with whatever version is current) and purchase 4 seats subscription if you offer it by then.

    Otherwise, no deal.

  • Yes….The Invisibles. Wasn’t that a movie? Well, if it was it was edited on an AVID.

  • I loved the memory on trim amounts. Trim plus 2, then just hit return over and over and get two more each time. Miss that one.

Lots about Avid I miss. Will see what they have to say at NAB.
