I believe that the AVID code for their editing software is the best, smartest and most comprehensive code ever written for non-linear editing. At the time FinalCut Pro came out, the only reason it won the battle (in many ways) was cost. We forgave its shortcomings, like media management etc. AVID was a tool you could trust to handle the numbers correctly.

I am not saying it was perfect, but to me it still stands as the best code ever written for our industry.

Bold statements, I know, but it is second to none in its robustness and solid interface by which many have tried to copy.

Not surprised the pros to whom every nuance of the edit matters use AVID.

Ours are 24 inch diagonal and are actually a bit wider than 1920 x 1080 native. They have HDMI in as well as VGA and DVI. We use them in studio with 5D and 7Ds with HDMI outs. Light and easy and cheap.

I agree that two 27s are way too wide.

For the money we do like the ASUS….I think I have 8 of them on 4 systems. Went to them over the Dell ultra sharp. So far so good. With some tweaking of the apple color sync custom profile and monitor’s internal settings we have a pretty good match to our external Plasmas.

I can tell if a person has a natural talent to edit in the first 7 cuts. Sequence of shots, timing from shot to shot, overall pacing in relation to subject, audio split edits if applicable, cutting to the beat or cutting for visual impact….all these things are usually revealed in the first 5-7 cuts of every reel or edited show piece. The rest of the real is just more of the same.

So make your first 7 edits count…work them, and you have to feel it…really feel it for yourself.

Try to visualize the first 7 shots of an opening sequence for a non-profit that helps at risk kids get off the street. What is the duration of that sequence? I would say under 12 seconds. But one shot will play for 4 seconds.

Look at the visual layout of your sequence on the timeline. If all the video chunks are laid out with the same duration, one after the other you probably aren’t there yet.

Also, always watch an edit without sound to see if the visual sequencing is working. Try laying a completely different piece of music against it and if it is strong visually I will bet it would work with many types of music….because the base story, the visuals are working.

Good stuff all. We pay better than anyone around our parts. I do worry about general burnout. Having to cut all day then head home to cut some more is not a great creative outlet. Heading out to a play or museum or to play shuffleboard or outdoor volleyball is.

I pay health benefits, have an employee IRA plan and pay a great wage. So as I consider these young new talent, I also see that they have a personal gig going and was wondering if anyone else considered how it might affect a new hire’s longevity and if it mattered.

This happens because the gear and software is so readily available too. Much more so than when I started, so in our industry it is more about access than just some societal shift.

I agree…keep them doing work they enjoy and perhaps they give up the side projects to take a ceramics class instead as their outlet. Better for both of us in the long run.

I can’t stand it when someone says a spot was done for $200. Let’s exaggerate shall we? Most of them were shot on Red. Did the actor’s not get paid? Crew? Did anyone get lunch? Location fee? Not to mention post and color grading and then final mastering. Audio work?

Plus, if you put in a PCI SSD drive in a MacPro Tower you have a rocket fast system drive. Put SSDs in both my old MacBook Pros and they became like new again….much faster app launches, saving files etc.

I agree that a legacy tower with 2 Thunderboldt 2 ports and four USB3 ports with the same 4-port PCI config would be ideal as a transition from our older 2008’s.
