“So clearly Apple is failing in how it markets the professional aspects of X.”

Exactly. Perception is half of truth. I don’t see Apple marketing the app as a professional product…it is not their messaging. Actually I only get impressions from Apple that they are a mobile device and media delivery company.

Whereas Adobe and AVID are wholeheartedly committed to the professional, broadcast media industry and beyond. That to me strikes the biggest difference between Adobe and AVID and Apple.

More about perception from marketing and messages than the actual software.

October 23, 2015 at 9:34 pm in reply to: Production and Editing Internship Cover Letter Advice

My advice…make sure it is Waaaaayyyyyy shorter than Mark’s reply.

In this business I look at a reel and not so much the letter. So it depends on who you are reaching out to. I like less formal, well laid out and abbreviated cover letters….especially if they add that they looked at most of our work and liked what they saw! : )

Sound like you are familiar with who you are writing to, which means no boiler plate copy!

October 22, 2015 at 7:14 pm in reply to: 48 or 60 fps for only a slight slow-mo effect

Here is our (very cool) workflow. Shoot shots we want to slo mo at 120, 90 or 60 fps, depending on the camera. Shoot the rest at 23.976.

Convert to ProRes and run the slo mo high frame rate clips thru Cinema Tools and conform to 23.976. Now you can play them at full slo mo or use the speed tools to speed it up….works at slo mo and works sped up with total flexibility.

In premier you can just bring in the raw and change the inspector frame rate of the clip from the original frame rate to 23.976 and it works the same way.

    Very cool.

Hmmm….sort of my secret but it all has to do with the Title of the page….in the HTML code you give each page a title. Google looks here first, then looks on the page for words that match the title. Most companies just have their company name in the Title. I have an obnoxious string of keywords….each page, including each bio and portfolio page has a combination of different words in different configurations. Words in the text of the page match the title mostly.

One more tip…every JPEG element on a page can also have keywords assigned to them in the HTML code….Google looks here second.

Finally make sure you have videos on YouTube (google again) and use similar keywords on each video that match the site.

    Bingo…Google love!

SEO….have you checked your Google results with keywords that potential clients might use? Does your name come up in the top 5 results?

Google “video production madison wisconsin” and wea re fourth under the paid ones at the top (I had a client tell me they have NEVER clicked on a paid link!) Google “video editing madison wisconsin” and we are first under the paid guys (who will rarely get a click)

Get that fixed and see if the phone doesn’t ring twice as much.

October 5, 2015 at 7:26 pm in reply to: IP question, using famous faces

Doesn’t sound like slander….but they do stand to make money from the likeness of the local “celebs.” Worst case they air the spot and you are contacted to take it down. You have a 1 in 3 chance of that happening. So are they willing to scrap the spot if you are asked to take it down? That’s the question.
