The important question is what do you WANT to do? You said you have editing skills. This could take you in two different directions. With those skills you could probably put together accurate post budgets so you could be a Post Production supervisor. But having those skills could also get you into a lead editor’s position, which might actually pay more and be more satisfying, depending on what you want to do. If you want to continue to be the jack of all trades, you might consider starting your own business. Find a few good freelance script writers and with your producing skills you could turn around entire projects.

Many of us have become Jack of all Trades, because our business almost requires it, except for the most focused of disciplines, like 3D animation etc. With those new skills you can position yourself in any of several paths. You have to decide which path you want. Then put a “label” on it that describes the position.

It might even be different for different companies.

But I still like the idea of starting your own business with your skill sets.

  • Having started my business, Tilt Media, 4 1/2 years ago, after having worked at various post houses for the previous 10 years, I too fins the Buisness/Marketing COW a great place to hang out (OK, mostly lurk). But I’ve gotten some great ideas, threw in a few of my own, and enjoyed the input. To me this is where the serious questions are posed. The challenging ones where a business might be on the line, where a profit margin might be at stake. That’s why it’s exciting for me.

    Ron, when is your birthday?

Thanks for all the contributors, Ron, Nick and the rest.

There is a relinking problem even within FCP where render files will not consistently relink. I think that sounds like what you are running into. I just saw an Avid Xpress HD Studio demo and I like the way OMF handles metadata. Quicktime is showing its age, and its limitations compared to how Avid tracks clips and clip data. I think Apple could stand to step back and take a look at the shortcomings that affect our workflows and put a big fix in there!

I think a RAID-1 is one solution here, much better than a tape backup. If the drives go down there is a mirrored copy of all the data…keep on working while you get the bad drive fixed, then restore the mirror and nothing was ever lost…not a moment of time. Caveat? Some performance decrease, and you have to either use half your existing storage, or double it to create the mirror.

The Madison MCA-I has renamed the long-standing Vidies Awards to the WAVE Awards in order to reflect the broader membership of MCA-I…WAVE stands for Web, Audio and Video Excellence.

Just an FYI…look for your call for entries in the mail later this Summer.

That is exactly what I was suspecting..that it was the second time around in AE that was causing the luma shift. So, not the best solution, but where do you change the preference setting you were talking about?

I’m seeing it too, and with the Aurora 10-bit codec too. I wonder if it’s a Quicktime thing with ANY 1-bit codec.

  • But it’s real slow and considering that a tape is about $2-3 and a DVD disk at 4.7 gig is still around 70

Holy crap! I was just seeing this with the Aurora Pipe 10-bit codec. I rendered an animation that had some 10-bit footage in it. After the render I had to fix a hair that was in the shot. I brought in the Aurora 10-bit rendered file and fixed the hair and when I compared the fixed move (2nd render) with the first render it was brighter. I applied a Brightness/Contrast to the 2nd render with about a -10 Brightness and a +4 Contrast setting. This got it close but it was more than just a brightness setting.

I’m real concerned about this especially if it is with Apple’s own codec.

    I am still on Panther 10.3.9 AE 6.5 QT 6.5.2 G4 dual 1-gig.

I have never seen this with Animation codec or any other 8-bit uncompressed codecs like the Aurora or AVID codecs.

    What do you think, Graeme?

June 28, 2005 at 1:34 am in reply to: XL1S Time lapse

Yes, but if a recorded duration was sped up by like 10000 percent or something like that and then you Strobed it so it was only playing single frames (have done it) it looks fine. I’m just curious to what Canon offers in the XL1S camera. I have a consumer Sony mini DV that works pretty good but is very limited in its settings.

    Anyone Else?
