I would definately find a sponsor. How much would you need to cover costs and take a bit home? I would sell them a bug on the clips for the whole length. “Your daily podcast from the gaming floor…sponsored by…”

I think the pay-per model might not work because you don’t know who will be downloading. That also makes it hard to sell to a potential sponsor. The first thing they will ask is how big is your audience.

Do you currently podcast? Is it successful?

If you can get a sponsor, let them gamble on how many hits you get. I wouldn’t do this unless I was independently wealthy or had the money from a sponsor up front.

Install DVD Studio Pro again…it looks to see what components you have and what is missing. It will do the rest…BTW, delete your A.Pack app to to have it reinstall it. Then, when you’re all done, run the software update to get things current.

The Association of Independent Commercial Producers (www.aicp.com) has a resource for its members but you can find it here:

    https://www.powerbid.com/

It is what the pros use and it can be modified for your use…the best thing is you won’t have to reinvent the wheel and yo won’t miss those little line items that will get you down the road if you don’t put them in the bid.

Um, are you ONLY working for them as a freelancer? Any other clients? If they are the only client you have as a freelancer, I’d get onboard for the benefits and security etc. Then if the time is right down the line get back out there and hit the streets.

    Nothing like security and benefits!

February 6, 2006 at 3:21 am in reply to: Ok, I’ve got one…Business Manager

No Nick, you nailed it in your first post and it was all I needed to hear. I certainly get your drift and take the advice seriously…no business manager, book a little more time for my accountant to do some reconciling, and keep doing the basic entry myself.

I also agree that I don’t want ANYONE but me doing the invoices…it, indeed, is a creative task! And I like doing it and being responsible for what I am charging for…no one but me to blame for a suspect invoice (never happened, knock wood). And, besides, I like being close to the numbers. It’s healthy for my company anyway.

    Thanks Nick.

But, does anyone out there have a different perspective? Just for giggles…

Sounds like you need a way to get out there and network. There are many trade organiations that meet regularly and can get you new leads. Also, make sure you have a good follow up plan. Let your clients know you have availablility and look forward to working on their next project. Keep youself in the loop!

The organizations range from small design clubs to AdFed, a national organization to MCA-I a media organization that has chapters in select cities. It might seem like some of these organizations are your competition, but if you are good and getting better, anyone who even mentions your name in a good light is free advertising…even if they are complaining that you are the new hot designer in town!

    Can’t hurt!

A good way to do this is with a deck and record the actual video reversing. But you could combine a combination of video look and a rolling horizontal bar along with a distortion of the footage. It’s real easy if you can actually rewind a deck and record it.

February 3, 2006 at 2:35 am in reply to: Coffee Trade Show Video Suggestion

I did one for a builder (architect) and it was about 3-4 minutes in length…people won’t stand at a booth much more than that for one video. However, in your case I have a few questions. What is the design of the booth? Is it a coffee shop atmosphere, warm and cozy? Do they have a slogan or tag line? Anything you can pull from their logo as elements that might make tasty wallpaper? I don’t know that you need to show the actual process, but rather do something on the screen that grabs an eye or two and pulls someone in closer. You know how the trade show thing goes…a lot of people walk on by. You need to find something that will stop them in their tracks.

Don’t assume that since they spent a bundle on the booth that they will spend a bundle on the walpaper in the booth. You need to get a budget from them. That should be first so yo know what you can work with. However if you want to purchase some images of coffee beans for the piece, let them know they can use them in future pieces, so it’s a good investment.

In the builder piece we had some excellent images of some high end architecture. I used them along with some simple text messages and the client chose some serious rocking tracks to grab them and off she went. I built the loop to the first track and we looped the visuals and chose a second song so it wasn’t the same song over and over…it was two songs over and over!

I just see something a lot more stylized and inviting. Have you ever walked into a coffee shop and watched a video of how they harvest and roast their beans? I just don’t see that being very effective.

Actually I see this as all graphics…

  • What I do is drag the clip up to an empty video track…I lock the other tracks below, apply the speed change and the lower tracks remain unchanged. Then I can drag the new speed changed clip back onto position. It’s a kludge, but it works and I don’t have to do it so often.

I’d love to see a speed change option where you get a dialog box when you apply the speed change in the timeline to ripple or not, and to start the clip at the head or obey the out point. That would work perfectly for me.

You nailed it. Couldn’t have said it better.

When I moved back to Wisconsin after living in Hawaii for 10 years, I had a great reel and lots of experience. It took three years to break into the community. It was a lot harder to work myself into those relationships than I had expected. Now, I appreciate greatly the clients and colleagues I have earned over the years and am glad to have accomplished something.

But it wasn’t without a lot of determination, believing in what I do, and passion that I got the work.

You got it exactly right, shooter.
