Well, there might be copyright issues using the movies, but I typically use FLV player and Snap z Pro (On a Mac) and grab it while it plays. Works pretty well.

  • No joke. That is our plan as well.

Sony, you are blowing it with the early HDV decks. Hopefully the 1500 won’t be a disappointment.

  • I am having the same issue. We have the Sony M25U deck and the footage was shot 720p. The manual says Sony can only play 1080i out the firewire and HDMI outputs. That might be my issue. I was able to take the component outputs as standard def downconverting to DVCAM….I used the firewire for machine control.

I have tried this deck on a PC with Avid Xpress Pro 5.6.4 and FCP 5.1.2 on a G4 dual 1 gig and a G5 dual 2.7. this is really frustrating. The Sony manual is not very helpful really. I can see the footage just fine in the LCD display on the deck and on the component outputs. Just not through firewire. If you hare having trouble with a camcorder as your deck then I am really stumped.

One more thing, up in the FCP menu I believe there is a pulldown that says “Easy Setups” and there you will find a way to launch a “special” log/capture window that seems to be only for HDV etc. It has a different look to it, than when you launch the capture window. Try the HDV one and see if that gets the signal going.

I am curious if you ever get video via firewire and what you did to make it happen.

Or you can reinstall DVD Studio Pro 3 which will add it back to your system…be sure to remove current versions of the Studio apps before installing or it will try to write over the newer versions. After installing, rename the app to the older version, return the newer ones to the Apps folder and export away.

If a station receives a tape at -12 don’t they set it up to their level? As long as the audio isn’t clipping. In both my DVCAM and Beta decks the output directly out of FCP at -12 matches perfectly the preset input level on both decks. If I set FCP tone to -20 then I’m certain the record level presets on the Beta would be way low.

Also, audio discs we get from both audio houses here seem to line up exaclty with -12 in FCP.

Hmmmm, curious about this one… -12 would be my guess.

If you want it back, install DVDStudio Pro 3 and you will get it back. I think you can install it separately if you choose custom install and only install compressor. It will install compressor and A.Pack. You will first have to pull the current compressor out of the apps folder temporarily….then when the old one is installed, rename the app and bring the newer one back into the apps folder. BTW, this will also restore Quicktime exporting to MPEG-2 directly off the FCP timeline or out of QT Player.

I had an onld G4 that behaved badly and seemed like the mother board or hard drive but it was the power supply. I did have a mother board go out on a G4 I bought on ebay…that was a bummer. It still sits in the corner for parts.

I have two older dual 2.7 G5s and they are running perfectly like the day they wer purchased….if you’re having problems I feel your pain.

Got it after I uninstalle dthe old Nvidia driver and installed the new one….made the desktop one big span across the two monitors and all was well. I had to uninstall the driver before the new one would install…for anyone who runs into this problem!

I bought the Sony M25U HDV deck and the Panasonic DVDProHD deck and since then we are being asked more and more to put video into Powerpoint (MPEG-1 of all things) and cool frontpage videos for web sites.

No fully HD projects yet, but several shot in HD and delivered HD. So the decks see some use, but my encoding apps get a lot more work.

YOu can also get extenders that come in 15 foot lengths and string as many of them as you need.
