Has DVD drive, and I actually use occasionally, silly clients still want DVDs. I was thinking about removing it and adding second drive, possibly SSD. CAN I THEN PUT DVD DRIVE IN USB HOUSING, OR DO I HAVE TO BUY THE NICE ALUMINUM APPLE EXTERNAL DVD DRIVE? Also, can you boot from external drive?

Okay, this has only confused me a little 🙂 I do on location editing via a macbook pro, 2.5 GHz quad i7 running lion. I have a mac Pro tower with 8 xeon cpu’s. on the laptop, how would I do a dual boot? Kind of limited drive space (750GB system drive.) can you boot an external drive? I do have a dual eSATA card. I only even consider this because I got a call requesting FCPX. apparently a client saw it and loved it…hope it works as nice as it looks.

I was not hitting limiters that I am aware of…but the 522 has an adjustable limiter threshold, and I do not know where they set it. I have been told where to keep my level, between -12 and -6 on our recorders, and that goes into yellow on mixer. It sounded identical to me before and after change. I am not sure if A1 even realizes these mixers have adjustable limiter threshold, or has set all mixers to identical threshold, or if all mixers are still at factory default. This is a multi-unit, multi-crew job, as you may have now gathered. I do know that there were dependencies on other gear, for instance different playback units were showing different levels, despite being digital. When I tried to explain that output may be variable and set differently, I was dismissed out-of-hand. I know one of the units can be adjusted to variable output, but the other was a model I was unfamiliar with. I a not going to make waves, I don’t think lessons and advice are received well in this environment. I am a very quick study, and love to learn anything new…but some people become very threatened and aggressive when approached with new info. Sad but true. My view is I’ll just be better and more valuable next time. FYI, I know about the limiter threshold on the unit because I downloaded and read manual cover to cover. I don’t mind being corrected, as long as the lesson is a valid one. Even after over 25 years in the biz, I still welcome it. Things change all the time, and with all the new standards you can never assume you know anything, let alone everything, anymore.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, FRAKIN’ thank you! I have been doing this a long time, and have forgotten more than many will ever know. This sounded fishy but I wanted to be sure. I used to work in a recording studio (old school, Studer 24 track and all that jazz) and learned a great deal while there, but never heard anything like this. Unfortunately, there is some semi-authority involved, best not to make wave. But thank you, I thought I was going out of my mind there, forgetting basics. Thank you.

Thanks. The noise being referred to was in the room/building. Creaky chairs, noises from the building at large, people in hall, etc. I was not system hiss (the 522 is incredibly quiet anyway). So lowering the gain on the coarse setting thus causing a need to raise the pot will not eliminate random low noises in the room? I was fairly certain this was the case. Now the reference to “warm” I wonder about. The level was fine, and I had set he gain so the the pot was at about 12 o’clock which is what I always do. I did not hear distortion, after it was turned down I needed to ride pot around 3 or 4 o’clock. Could the original higher gain setting have added tones that warmed up the sound that old not be present by potting up to get the same level out of the mic?

I do all my credit rolls in After Effects or even Motion. Very flexible. I like to do rolls where the space in middle stays the same and left column is right justified/right column is left justified, more film look, plus you can do other interesting things in the midst of the roll, so that is always my route.
My issue is with simple still titles. I wanted the speed I remember from titler, but all the titles look like crap, i just cant figure it out. In previous versions I NEVER had this issue. I just feel like there is a setting I am missing. I generally don’t like Boris products. I just never get the interfaces.

I am editing in DV 16:9 mode and exporting via media encoder to .mp4 for youtube posting. My final output is progressive (matches their footage) at 854×480 square pixels. It is titler. If I do titles in AE they render fine. I am only using DV setting because client sent me lousy footage, but it is HD. Smaller size lets me resize and crop their footage for proper framing of shots. Video looks fine, AE titles Look fine, PS titles look fine, only titler titles have an issue. I seem to have very limited project formats in Premiere, the only SD 16:9 project seems to be DV.

I will check tomorrow when I go back to studio, but titles always look bad. They look fine in titler window, but bad in pgm window and in exported videos. I wonder if all project has a problem and it just pops on titles, but I don’t think so. Video seems fine, just titles keyed over look jaggy, not smooth edges. Never had this problem in older versions, so I am confused. Have had cs5 a while, but have not realy used it. Also, if I create title in after effects and nest it in premiere (ala motion in fcp) that looks fine. Only titler titles look bad. One reason I took this project to premiere was to make simple titles (I hate fcp options, all basically too slow work flow) and because premiere is easier to work with crappy video type client gave me, I don’t have to convert everything to work with it.

Thank you Mike! That was part of my original thoughts. You said it much better! I think I said something like “it is a Mac thing” I will say, my MacPro is the best computer I have ever owned, and I have owned almost every workstation sized system, even a Silicon Graphics back in the day, the Apple hardware is top notch. I just hope they keep producing it. They seem to be leaving it behind. Also, the app store is a big error for pro users. If I can go to say, BH in New York, and they can sell me Avid, or demo Adobe for me and make a buck, they wll be a sales force for those products. The app store is part of Apple’s vision for a medialess future that is not completely here yet. First off, I like back up install disks, every now and then I do a full system clean and need them. It is the mentality that did away with DVDSP. Admittedly, I can make blu-rays and my clients don’t really want them, blu-ray is sort of DOA, they hype it and all, but it is still not so popular. And HD media players are more accessable today. I give clients a lot of HD downloads they can play right on their TVs or via ps3 or WD, etc. But many many clients still want a DVD, everyone has a Player and can watch it. Apple should usher in the future, but you can’t force it on people. If they had introduced the iPod with no way to get the music off of your CDs and on to iPod, nobody would even know what an iPod is…or was.

I agree, it is all about work flow. I usually use FCP now, but just last week, I found editing in Premiere with linked AE comps a much better, and faster, flow for a specific project (I have never cared for motion compared to AE). I guess the lesson is, get as much as you can, learn as much as yo can, use it all whenever you can, pray you have what you need to get the job done, because you want the job 🙂
