Good to know. I was reading another article where people had =to disable graphics for photoshop to run. also, I am ordering the 5500m…it is A LOT more $$$ for the 5600, but now I will have to consider it. I may just go with the iMac…but portability is a consideration…

Found a Thunderbolt 1 (I assume backward to 2( adaptor but no Tb3/usbC. Also…difficult to get Tb3>>Tb2 adaptors. I own Tb accessories so this is a pain. The OWC dock may be the only option. It has both.

January 23, 2018 at 6:49 pm in reply to: White noise on SONY PXW Z 90 is this normal?

Thank you. Yes I have done all kinds of tests. The noise is definitely greater when I turn on phantom power. Without phantom power is almost nonexistent. It is very low when phantom power in on and nothing is hooked up. I think the microphone I have may just be generating noise on its own or picking up room noise. It was pretty cheap and I took a chance. I may have to invest more, or like I said maybe it’s just picking up the room because it’s really sensitive and I am mistaking it for white noise. But it doesn’t sound like a fan, it sounds like hiss. I have a wireless lav that does not require phantom, and it is much cleaner although I do hear what I assume is a little bit of radio frequency interference in the background. When I disconnect that mic the channel goes pretty silent. The wired lav that requires phantom has “a lot” of noise, but when I disconnect it there is still a little bit of noise, then when I switch off the Phantom that goes away. I put “a lot” in quotes because that’s just my opinion. Maybe it’s perfectly acceptable. But I am seeing it run about -45 to -50 DB. That seems like an awful lot to me. With the wireless lav it is a small fraction of that. I am going to run some more concise tests and maybe submit the waveforms to the audio group. Thank you.

It seems even if I run it with no input hooked up I hear some “hiss.” Seems worse with phantom power on.

  • Okay…so if you work with DaVinci no problem. Thank you. No issue in Adobe either.

My question was much simpler…if I bring a clip I to FCP…7 or X…and then output it, say take it from xdcam and output (recompress) to ProRes or another format, USING FCP ONLY, there is a definite shift in luminance or gamma. You seem to be confirming that this is true. Try that, simple test, bring a clip into final cut, recompress it in final cut, and then compare the two. Do not use any other tool for compression, do not export an XML and bring it into DaVinci. Use DaVinci only to compare the clip created in Final Cut to the original clip. If you put one clip on top of the other and then disable the clip on and off you see the shift visually. If you bring them into a program like after effects or photoshop where you can hover over a pixel and see the value of that pixel you will see a numerical read out of the difference.

As far as the next person to respond to you, who says that you’re not seeing a difference I don’t think he quite understands. I am talking about if you work only in Final Cut there is a definite difference. I know you’ve done some work on this, but please do this simpler test and confirm what I’m saying.

I believe you will see a significant difference such as the one I have demonstrated above. I have been wondering if I have something set wrong. Some checkbox ticked or some level compression set wrong that I am not aware of. I don’t believe I do. Honestly, I don’t edit in Final Cut anymore. I used premiere for years, and then move to Final Cut because everyone loved it, and then move back to Premiere when 10 came out. I’m probably going to start working with DaVinci now that I am shooting in log

Thanks for your time on this, it does sound like you are confirming that it’s not just my system. I think the other person responding should also do the simple test I am suggesting. Just compress a single clip in Final Cut, and then compare the outputs the original uncompressed, or rather raw footage clip. There really does seem to be a difference of about 5 to 10% in brightness.

    Thank you.

  • Can you import the 2 separate channel files back into premiere or audition, pan the appropriate tracks left and right, then re-export that as a stereo wav? It’s all I can think of at this point via adobe suite.

  • ISSUE SOLVED. It turned out to be Kaspersky Security Suite. Once disabled, uploads work fine. Oddly, it does not seem to interfere with cloud storage or my ftp, just video uploads. Many thanks to the most excellent Apple tech Randall who helped me pinpoint this rather quickly. Time for a support note to Kaspersky.

  • Also, that double post was something I did on my phone while on the train. I was surprised to see the double post myself, don’t know how or why that happened, but it does once in awhile.

April 6, 2017 at 2:24 pm in reply to: Issues with nested sequences.

My guess is that nesting does take more memory. Check how much memory you have allotted to Adobe softwares, and close any Adobe software don’t need. You might just not have enough RAM, even if you are maxed out. It’s just a guess, but nesting a sequence would take some with more RAM. Your copy paste idea sounds like a reasonable workaround. I do mostly Cuts in my editing, but if you needed to do a fancy transition between two sequences with several layers at the head and tail, you could probably get away with nothing just those sequences for the transition.

  • Speed is fine. And last night it worked fine…despite upload seeming unusually fast. My next step was actually to try a different computer. Plus I still have my lion boot on a partition, a had software that did what I needed and ran under lion but wanted upgrades to move OS…so I just kept the boot, as I rarely use it. Mostly use partition as current project video storage. Ssd, super fast.
