October 12, 2007 at 5:10 pm in reply to: H264 for broadcast?

H.264 is one of the variable codecs used for HD DVD authoring, and a fantastic internet delivery codec due to it’s image quality and low filesize. Though, even at high data rates, I don’t think I’d personally lay that to tape for broadcast. I agree with you, that on playback it will be fine, but after broadcast it will probably suffer from banding and other types of noise issues. I could be wrong, and I’d be interested in what others have to say, but that’s my two cents.

October 12, 2007 at 5:05 pm in reply to: Vegas vs. Avid

Vegas actually does a very good job about cross the gamut from editing into motion graphics, we used to cut on Vegas at a mobile entertainment studio I worked at. However, if you really want advanced motion graphics and compositing (things like displacement maps, 3 camera moves and whatnot) you really want to go with After Effects. As far as the argument of Vegas vs Avid, and any NLE for that reason, each one has their own set of pros and cons. I personally prefer Avid, but the most commonly used are FCP and Avid. I recommend learning both, but if Vegas works for your own freelance work, keep with that.

October 9, 2007 at 5:01 pm in reply to: AVID disclaimer from annual report

This really is not news. Agreeing with what has been said earlier, every company disclaims that there could indeed be coding errors, hence patches and new builds. Before you go on an NLE witchhunt, consider that every time Apple release a patch for FCP, that is admission of the same guilt (and I only use Apple as an example, because I won’t be drawn into an Avid vs FCP war).

Have you ever editing a program that was rejected by network because of a color spec being illegal? The answer is probably yes, and yes that means you and I are just as subject to the same fallibility. It happens.

You should probably ask them what delivery format they want. H.264 and VP6 are very popular delivery codecs, and likewise they can tell you what resolution they’d like the final delivery in.

September 25, 2007 at 9:30 pm in reply to: H.264 banding (?) issue

If you are rendering out of After Effects, try changing the the composition from an 8 bit composition to a 16 bit composition. Unless you are using a lot of 8-bit only filters, it should reduce the banding.

September 19, 2007 at 5:59 pm in reply to: From Avid to AE on 2 different machines

That would only work if you had all of the same footage digitized on the other system with AE. You could use Media Mover (You can download a free demo, or buy it for $150 and it’s absolutely worth it) to transport the Media Files to the external hard drive, or try consolidating but I don’t know if that would take less time than exporting a self contained quicktime file.

September 17, 2007 at 11:12 pm in reply to: Upgrading an OLD media composer

I know the Meridien systems qualify for a trade in if you’re looking to upgrade to a Media Composer Adrenaline, but I’m not sure what trade in deal, if any, is available for the older ABVB systems. You’re probably going to have to call Avid directly to discuss that one.

September 17, 2007 at 5:43 pm in reply to: Avid engineers lazy? Engenheiros da Avid pregui

In addition to Terrence’s point about coding not necessarily being that simple, there is also their own coding priorities. Having acquired Sun Dance Digital and Sibelius in the past couple years I’m sure there’s a long list of interoperability plans (which has always been one of Avid’s stronger points).

Additionally, the Intel Quad Core processors are relatively recent, and while it will become a higher priority as they become more present in the marketplace, it’s probably not worth shifting their current endeavors to tackle that issue.

Avid is frequently accused of being slow to release revisions, especially as computer technology advances, as to whether that is the case or not, I’ll let that be handled in a different thread, but I have always found their revisions to be solid, their customer service to be great, and I’ll continue to support them in my work and recommendations.

August 10, 2007 at 6:00 pm in reply to: Is there any solution for this?

I modified a shoulder mount I bought to accomodate a shotgun mic and light. I use the Spider Brace (https://www.spiderbrace.com/) and drilled out a small hole underneath it and bought a little bracket from Home Depot to mount the light underneath. Works well with the little LED light I use, and also with the PAG DV light.

August 8, 2007 at 6:38 pm in reply to: Mpeg converter?

MPEG streamclip is a free converter available at http://www.squared5.com/ You can use that to convert your mpeg clip into a quicktime mov using Avid’s codecs. That would probably be the easiest way to get it into your system.
