Avid engineers lazy? Engenheiros da Avid pregui
Posted by Lobito on September 16, 2007 at 11:47 amHi Avid Avids!
I’m wondering… does Avid Media Composer, Xpress Pro HD or any other Avid product fully fully explore quad core intel processors?
I’ve made a small test importing, rendering and playing footage and
only one processor was used.
Are Avid engineers lazy ?tks to all,

No, they aren’t lazy. There are a bunch of very smart guys there.
If you think writig code is so easy, show us all up by doing it yourself.

September 16, 2007 at 10:18 pmI didn’t said that was easy!!!
But for a big company like Avid I supposed it could be…
I’m a avid user for more than 10 years and I really like avid products and I agree with you about their smartness, but why does Autodesk (Maya – 3D Max), Maxon (cinema 4D), Apple (Final Cut) and Adobe (After Effects, Premiere, etc..) products support it and Avid don’t?

September 17, 2007 at 1:47 amFinal Cut is not Multi Processor enabled.
After Effects as I understand it, allows some effects to distribute the processing if you install the mutli processor plugin.
Can’t speak for the others.
I think you need to research this a bit more before you condemn Avid’s engineers.

September 17, 2007 at 5:43 pmIn addition to Terrence’s point about coding not necessarily being that simple, there is also their own coding priorities. Having acquired Sun Dance Digital and Sibelius in the past couple years I’m sure there’s a long list of interoperability plans (which has always been one of Avid’s stronger points).
Additionally, the Intel Quad Core processors are relatively recent, and while it will become a higher priority as they become more present in the marketplace, it’s probably not worth shifting their current endeavors to tackle that issue.
Avid is frequently accused of being slow to release revisions, especially as computer technology advances, as to whether that is the case or not, I’ll let that be handled in a different thread, but I have always found their revisions to be solid, their customer service to be great, and I’ll continue to support them in my work and recommendations.

September 19, 2007 at 11:41 pmPersonally I prefer to have something stable and properly tested, than out the door quick.
I have been working on a few shows in the last few months on my non-approved home system (I am very close to specs (dual Xeon, Quadrofx etc), but not bought from HP or Dell etc)….I can honestly say that I have never worked on anything as stable as this. I have had some start-up issues with XP, but Avid has been flawless….I have not encounterd a single Avid related crash.
