Check the After Effects tutorial, I think there was a tutorial for creating a counter like this using expressions.

Isn’t that an HDCAM-SR deck? I don’t have experience with it, I just thought that it just recorded HDCAM-SR and not HDCAM, but I could be wrong.

January 22, 2009 at 8:08 pm in reply to: Graphics Studder in 23.98

Where your graphics created at 23.976 or 23.98? Final Cut abbreviates 23.978 as 23.98 even though it really is playing back at 23.976. After Effects, however, is framerate independent and can create graphics at anyframe, including 23.98 which is not 23.976.

I had this problem as a result of our graphics house delivering us stuff at 23.98. If that’s the case, have them remake them. If time is of the essence and you have to layback right now, you can try bringing the graphic into FCP in the viewer. Then with the viewer selected, export the file back out (since using the same codec you shouldn’t introduce any quality hits). Then reimport that file. It worked for me, but as I said if that is case, the graphics house should remake the stuff.

You might be able to eq it out to a degree. Using the three band, you could roll off your 10ks and see if that works. If not, Soundtrack Pro’s noise reduction filter will do an excellent job at this if you don’t over do it.

January 22, 2009 at 6:02 pm in reply to: Current IO compatibility?

I use the original IO on my Mac Pro 10.5.5 with FCP 6.0.5 and it’s a little finicky at times, but it’s been good to me. The only thing I’ve noticed is occasionally signal to my broadcast monitor doesn’t get updated. When that happens, if I disable external monitor and then enable it again (cmd-f12) it comes back fine.

The only other issue I’ve had with it, is that for the life of me I cannot get it to accept my xlr mic to be used for the VO tool (even after disabling external monitoring) but I only record scratch audio anyway, so I’ve been cheating by running a line out of my mixer into the Mac Pro line in.

When you installed the software, did you install both the digital and analog packages? Otherwise, like Gary mention, I would recommend calling AJA, their tech support is top notch.

January 19, 2009 at 5:11 pm in reply to: Graphic Cards????

“Then I would sell the left-over card. Or, just keep it. I’m guessing it supports 2 monitors. With the NVIDIA and ATI, you could have 4 monitors…if for some reason you needed that many. ”

Keeping in mind that Final Cut doesn’t like 3 displays (so it’d be fine for your other applications), and also assuming that the drivers between the two different video card manufacturers don’t conflict with each other.

January 14, 2009 at 11:31 pm in reply to: rendered file will not go away

You could use your Render Manager to blow away all of your render files, but if you’re talking about a large sequence that would require a long time to re-render, that’s probably not what you want. Did you trash your preferences?

The only problem you’ll have is that Animation cannot be played in realtime, so it will have to be rendered everytime you adjust it, or drop a filter on it or whatnot. Certainly an inconvenience, but it will work.

No, you’re not living in denial. FCP defaults to adding a 2:2:2:4 pulldown when you do that which makes it appear to stutter and not look so good. Nattress makes a pretty good standards conversion filter. However, if you are working with all 23.976 material and need to layback to 29.97, the Kona card will take care of that for you.
