Set the deck to downconvert to DV via firewire. Then set your deck control to be firewire, but set your capture settings for DVCPRO HD via SDI.

Are you dragging your pro res file into DVD Studio pro and letting that do the compression? If so, you should drag the file into compressor and use one of their highest quality DVD templates. It will do a better job.

Regarding Color, ATI cards work best in Color. The ATI 4870 will smoke in color. I realized that may not solve your specific issue in color since I don’t even know what it is, but that’s a start.
Regarding the render issue in Final Cut. Just for the sake of asking, what effect are you rendering? I used to have issues with certain 3rd party plugins rendering in High Precision YUV. If you are using a 3rd party plugin, make sure you have the most recent version.
That’s weird that it works on one system but not the other. Are the OS versions the same on both? Likewise, same version of Final Cut?

FCP doesn’t have anything good for this. After Effects has paint (and clone brush) tools. However, if you’re unwilling to spend money you’re pretty much hosed.

I’ve seen this before, I believe it’s an issue with Perian. Go into your system preferences, and if you have perian installed, uninstall it. The use L&T to bring in your AVCHD footage, and if you need, you can reinstall perian after that. I don’t know if this issue exists in FCP7, but I definitely saw it in FCP6.

If the rest of your footage was not shot squeeze mode, then don’t mess with the aspect ratio because it will look distorted.

If you wanted to recapture as uncompressed HD, Yes. The IO HD is an incredible device, but it does not support uncompressed HD capture due to the fact that it uses FW800 as an interface. You’d need a Kona 3 or LHi (I believe the LHe will also capture uncompressed fine) to recapture as uncompressed.
As far as limited dynamic range of the color, Pro Res (and HQ) are 10 bit codecs, so you shouldn’t be losing dynamic range, but it is a lossy codec. That said, it’s a very efficient lossy codec and people online programming with it all the time because of it’s high quality to storage requirement ratio.
Now as far as delivering your self contained quicktime to this post house, you could use compressor to transcode it to apple uncompressed, or you could even download Avid’s Quicktime codecs (if this issue is solely of being able to ingest it into the Avid system) however if they insist that the entire program be recaptured as uncompressed HD, you will need a different capture card. Again, Kona 3, LHi, MXO2, they’ll take care of this.
