I’d use After Effects. You could probably do it in Motion too, but I’ve never used it for that.

For something like that, especially if the subject or camera is moving around, I would use After Effects. Motion track the person, and try using either a compound blur or a median blur.

You aren’t routing your scratch disks through aliases are you? I’ve seen people try that, and FCP will hate you for it. Beyond that, I’m not aware of any sub directory limitation of Final Cut. Have you tried trashing your preferences?

A GRAID isn’t going to give you great results with 2K DPX files, even via E-Sata. You’ll want to use at least a 4 way dripe, or RAID-5.
Cal Digit makes good RAID setups. I would look into their products.

Firewire 800 will not push 4:4:4, not by a long shot. Was it transferred to Pro Res 4444? I don’t believe you can easily work with that format with about at least Final Cut Pro 7. You will want a RAID setup, and not a small one like a Lacie Big Disk or G-Raid, you want a four way stripe, or a RAID 5.
At the very minimum, upgrade your system to Final Cut Studio 3 (for Final Cut 7). Since you’re not going to film out, you might consider converting your footage to Pro Res or Pro Res HQ, since the data rates are considerably lower. They’ll still be hard on a firewire drive, but more manageable.

Yes. They need to all be the same. As for mixing the XDCAM EX and Photo JPG, if you want realtime playback, you have to convert them to Pro Res. You can still edit with them, but they will have to be rendered anytime you adjust them.

I’d recommend doing this in After Effects. Drop your clip into the timeline and control click the position parameters. This will allow you to type an expression. You want to type wiggle(10,1) 10 is the amount of wiggle, 1 is the frequency. So, once a second it will wiggle by 10 pixels. (I might be backwards on that, but it’ll be easy to tell once you know the rule behind it) That’s how I’d do it. Less manual labor, and it’s smoother looking than in FCP.

Mocha is fantastic for motion tracking. I know they make mocha for Final Cut, but I’ve never used it. I’ve used Mocha and Mocha shapes for After Effects, and it’s great.
