Firewire 800 is pretty slow, mixing framerates is processor intensive, and H.264 is very processor intensive. Try transcoding your footage to DNxHD. The firewire drive still be a bit slow, but might work better.

At the moment, since Avid is not 64 bit, you probably won’t see any difference. In fact, on newer Macs that would boot natively into 64 bit mode, users had to use a patch to force their macs to boot into 32 bit mode since Avid wouldn’t run in 64 bit mode.

Regarding the new version, I would hold off and wait until it’s released and likewise, the system requirements are released.

If you’re on a Mac that has Media Composer, and you buy Compressor 4 from the App store for 49.99, you might also be able to encode to Pro Res. I’m not 100% positive on this, since the Pro Res codec might only become available with the purchase of FCPx, but I would assume it become available with all Pro App purchases.

I’m guessing it was either done using speed ramps in Avid (Avid’s motion effects and interpolation options tend to give cleaner speed adjustments than Final Cuts frame blending) or it was send to After Effects for time-remapping. On a Macbook Pro, hitting Fn (the function key) and up on your keyboard, will act as home. To remove a mapped key that you don’t want, navigate in the command palette. I forget what tab it’s under, but there’s a “Blank” option there. Drag “blank” over what you want to erase.

If you’re just coming over from FCP, I’d highly recommend the Media Composer for FCP Users DVD. Avid sells it on their website, and it got me up on my feet fast coming from FCP to Media Composer.

I can create a separate project at 30i, import the clip. Close the 30i project. Open my 23.976 1080p project, then open the bin with the 30i clip. This process seems clunky, but works. Is there a simpler way? Likewise, will this cause issues for online, for example if I were to use a piece of DV footage in offline, but upconvert it to HD for online?

I just picked up the Media Composer for FCP users DVD and it’s fantastic. Still, it’s been said time and time again here, don’t force Avid to work like FCP because they don’t quite work the same way, but it’ll get you up and running very quick, and it’s $50 on Avid’s website.

Did your project crash at some point? When that happens, sometimes your scratch disks will get set to your system drive. Check your scratch disks.
