Always always transcode. Use AMA as a means to view your footage, even log your footage, but transcode to MXF media when you’re ready to edit. You can’t kick out an AAF for audio mix from AMA media, and this issue you’re having does happen quite a bit with AMA. You can transcode to DNxHD 145 or even 220 if you want to work at high res.
If you’re using Media Composer 6, don’t use AMA to bring it in. If you set your media creation settings to it’s matching flavor of Pro Res and import it, it should fast import. Granted, only the Mac version of Media Composer 6 can do this, so if you’re on a PC, DNxHD it is.

On the last show I worked on, we AMAed 7D footage and batch imported it for online and it worked fine.

As I continue to troubleshoot, I noticed that all of my media drives were mirrored. Most shows I’ve worked on had the projects workspace mirrored, and the media workspaces unmirrored. This leads me to speculate if the mirroring process is causing a performance hit that might make the Avid unstable (in the consolidation process). Does this seem plausible?

I’ve never personally used media mover, though I hear it praised all over the forums. What is the advantage of media mover over consolidate, outside of not tying up the Avid?

If you want to move the media itself, the function is called consolidate. This will move the media from hard drive to hard drive. Granted, Final Cut Pro can keep media in any folder on your hard dive, but Avid can only store Media in a file at the root level called “Avid Media Files”
If it’s the master clips that you want to see, starting with your sequence, if your sequence is in a bin with other sequence, drag it into a bin with only that sequence. Then click on the hamburger menu in the lower right of the bin display. There should be an option called “Set Bin Display”. Click on it, and at the bottom there is a feature called “Show Reference Clips”. Enable that. Now it shows all those clips in the bin as well as the sequence. If you don’t want to see them anymore, you can uncheck this option. Otherwise, you can drag them into a new bin to reference them later.

Also is there a way to move tracks downward from the keyboard the way option down did in fcp (an often unknown function)? I’m in Avid 5.5 btw.”Entirely in the keyboard, not that I know of, but if you go into segments mode and hold shift + cmd and drag the clip down, it will lock it horizontally so that you can drag it down without moving it down the timeline.
