    Yep on the D9.

The thing is we still have a lot to deal with – it is just different packaging. Now we have P2 chips and now Sony’s new XD CAM with both the CHIP recording version and the DVD/Disc record media. HDV on DV Tape. And there are probably some new formats that I’m not even familiar with yet. We will have to see what NAB holds. Of course with web marketing NAB doesn’t have the prestige that it used to have for exhibitors. Of Course we heard months ago that AVID was skipping NAB and marketing directly to customers “where they live and work”. I’m still waiting on a AVID rep to show up on my doorstep.

I know what you mean about having exceptional monitoring. i was at Crawford Communications (Crawford.com) for several years. Crawford has been a leader from the beginning in the adoption of HD. One thing that we learned there was that it is very difficult to appreciate HD quality on monitors that have a diagonal measurement of less than 48 inches. You can certainly that it is HD but you still miss a lot of information. So when the HD edit suites were constructed they equipped them with HD test monitors but also with high quality HD projectors. With those projectors we could see EVERYTHING. We understood the strengths and weaknesses of our material and we could act accordingly to correct things that needed to be dealt with.

THere are several speakers that might fit into your budget. I do recommend that you get Powered speakers just to simplify things. Flat scren monitors (Apple Cinema Displays, LCD and Plasma) usually do not require sheilded monitors. But you will have to keep your cell phone away if you go with unsheilded monitors. If you ar eloking to do audio for HD the gold standard is 5.1 SUrround Sound and for that you will need a lot more than $500. So fo now stay with stereo only. Be sure to save enough money for a Sub (also called an LFE for Low frequency Effects). Otherwise you’ll only be hearing about half the mix. Here are my pics for audio monitors in your proce range. You’ll have to agressively shop in order to stay on budget adn I would visit Ebay frequently:

    Fostex PMO.5
    Alesis M1
    M Audio BX8a

And if you want to go insane listen to a pair of Kinoshita monitors – only about $50K a pair.

Well I’m the first to respond, but in a word, get the NTSC monitor even if you have to use a non-broadcast monitorfrom Best Buy. You’ll also need a video interface card as well – like an AJA card. I suggest that you go ahead and get something that will do both SD and HD so that in a few months you won’t be buying the card all over again. it is likely that the video card may cost as much or more than your monitor.

I’m sure that others will chime in likewise.

  • Ok I’m sorry I used the cute little misleading Blond subject. Could someone tell me if I should delete the older Quicktime player? Thanks in advance.

  • Sorry about that. I originally posted this with a different title and got no response. However if you’ll read the end of the message you’ll realize that we are all need God’s grace as we all have our heads in the gutter. Naked Blonde Brownies are my favorite dessert and not pornographic or disrespectful of women in the least.

The reason I asked about the size is that you might try resizing the photos to a much smaller size. 1920 x 1080 (HD) is approximately 6 times the size of Standard definition. If you are working in SD and only need blow them up slightly then your resolution will only need to be slightly larger than SD. With 2400x 1600 you are using file sizes that are pretty large.

THe way that I reduce sizes is to take them into Photoshop and reduce the size there. That method is pretty efficient.

Another thing I might recommend is that you purchase a very afordable program called Fotomagico. This is an incredibly fast program with a low learning curve and you can export a QTmovie for use in your program. It only works for certain kinds of things but for those it is fabulous.

July 31, 2007 at 12:53 am in reply to: Still having sync issues…PLEASE Respond!!!

Usually when audio gets out of sync over time it is a problem with sampling rates that differ from your playback rates. But it could be a problem with the timecode you are using as well. Drop frame versus non-drop. I’m really unfamilar with the DAC-100 but does it produce two different capture files- one for audio and another for the DV video? Your problem sounds remarkably like the problems we used to have with the early AVIDs.

For others here was Scott’s original posting:

I read the post about the sync problem and mine might have the same problem, but I will post any way. I am trying to capture from a VHS through a datavideo dac-100. I have done this before with no problems, but I just recently upgraded to from a G5 to an intel mac. Once digitized and in the timeline, the audio plays fine, but as is plays longer, the audio slips more and more out of sync. I did notoce that the audio setting on the timeline was at 48.0 and the same setting for the clip is something like 4753859.0. I tried to capture a little at at time, but the further I got in to the tape, the audio number would get further and further away from 48.0
