[Greg Andonian] “SHIFT-F.” It very useful. yep like a match frame. yep like a PIOP. X tracks all kinds of metadata. For me, the difficulty has been finding the buttons and menu items that display that data.

The precision editor really is good. Some keyboard function would make it top notch. There’s some other silliness to it too. Clicking the mouse on a frame instantly changes the edit to point to that frame. I really hate that, actually.

It’s only on the primary for a very good reason. Connected clips are like “b-roll” or “insert edits” that are supposed to exactly correlate to the shot underneath it. The assumption (or is it presumption?) is that the process of placing a connected clip is by de facto a precision edit. There’s a few short cuts that turn connected clips into primaries. (Not in front of X right now and my memory has failed me.)

[Greg Andonian] “it was never meant to be used for very complex projects and workflows” In my opinion, you have it exactly backwards. X was designed for very complex projects and workflows. For example, multiple camera formats in the SAME timeline without any pre-transcoding. To an Avid editor this sounds like blasphemy (and an encroachment on profitability considering transcoding footage is billable hours). To a PP editor whose already used to this, its worth figuring out why X’s method works better than PP’s. But that’s too much for this post and besides it’s all searchable in this forum. But for the real big deal is 3rd party developers. Do you need an app that gets your audio out of X and into ProTools? There’s an app for that. And so on…

In your testing exploring check out Compound Clips. I really like them, actually, especially for audio bussing. I’ve posted on it a couple of times. But here’s the gist: Put three or four clips in the timeline. Then select them all and create a compound clip. Then hit CMD-8 and the “auto audio” tools pop-up. For me the eye-opener here is I can effect all the audio with a single effect. Next question: I wonder if that will work for Color Correction?

The mac pro thing…yeah, I don’t get it. Until the software can actually use all the power, it’s really just a Hummer sitting in bumper to bumper traffic.

Suffice it to say: I disagree. I believe that’s a lot of money. I believe apple believes that is a lot of money. I believe apple believes closing their pro editing market diminishes their brand.

Reality is, I received a variety of footage. I honestly started transcoding in compressor to be professional. I started to put it all in APR422, to edit in Legend.

Then the Matrix reloaded itself, and I was all…

No kidding. Avid and CS6 are lame ducks and they know it. (Let me also state I used Premiere today, haven’t used Avid since 2003, M100 since 2005.) Editing is a fashion industry.

I–Rich–need a machine that will ingest footage from multiple sources simultaneously and let me conform to a single output. Moreover, it’s faster and more awesome to cut.

Two more points.

1. I love editing.
2. How am I gonna make up the cost structure? I get to do what I love to do quicker but I make less dough.

Oh…Legend. I’ll be at Disneyland on Tuesday…really.

HBS — colleagues of mine — hate advertising dollars (and I mean hate) because it’s so hard (he said “incommensurate”) to track actual ROI. It has been proven that Customer X saw the tv Ad and received the direct mail and also is friends with other customers (meaning they heard word of mouth). When you ask customer “how did you hear about us” they say “friend told me.” Yet it can be proven (via other data streams) that customer saw ad and received mail.

You’ll recognize this from another point of view, so let me say I’ve been reading your posts for quite some time and have profited well from it, so thank you! In return let me say…

You’ve said some if not many of your contacts (long term, familiar advertisers) were laid off and now you’re forced to work with newbies.

Here’s why, from an HBS analytical point of view.

It’s a better ROI to fire all the advertisers and retrain some employees as direct sales associates. That means, they make telemarketing phone calls.

Push a button, one button — all five cameras are magically (i mean, metadatally) sync’d. Cut the pic. The first session will be filled with expletives and fist poundings and hyperbole, by you. The second one will be done faster than that and so on until it’s all done faster than Legend. Session 3, in my prognostication will put you in a positive return on capital employed.

Need access to the Legend projects. Spend $10 on 7tox. DONE!
