Did you “export Quicktime movie” (NOT Quicktime conversion) and select “use current settings”? If so, this should be an exact copy of your time line with no re-compression involved. Strange. There must be some setting that is not the same.
Can you give me a run down of your entire workflow? I know you said Uncompressed 1920×1080. Is that what your Timeline is set to as well? How about your titles. How are you creating them? Text generator from FCP? Motion? something else?

Export Quicktime movie (same as source) and it should be identical to what you have on the time line. But don’t trust the Quicktime player for QC. What does it look like when you bring the new uncompressed file back into FCP?

I am noticing a heck of a lot of noise coming from the G-Raid that I have not noticed before with other brands…whirring, clunking.
Yeah… this is NOT normal. Every time I have experienced this, a drive failure is usually the next step. Run disc utility (or better yet, Disk Warrior) and see what it tells you. It will tell you if there is a problem. But I would back it up (sounds like you have) and replaced as soon as possible.

Not unless you need it for a specific look… and NEVER do this in camera…. Unless you are absolutely SURE you want it that way… save it for post if you really want that specific look.

On the 7D, try dialing down your “sharpness” setting all the way to the left, same with your “contrast”. Then dial down your “saturation” by 2 clicks from center. This will give you a nice color gradable image and will reduce that “sharp look” you are referring to.

Is it by chance a commercial DVD? If so the copy protection may be kicking in and the Kona card will not capture protected media.
If it is just an unprotected DVD you may have your capture settings wrong. Make sure your settings in FCP match with the AJA Control panel. Use easy setup in FCP and see if that solves your issue.

Thank you all for the great input. It is most appreciated. As of now I have temporarily put on hold ordering the field monitor as we just added a second edit suite to the studio. We are going into our heavy post production season and my needs were greater for this than a field monitor. But I will be making the decision soon and placing my order and will let you all know what I end up with and give some feedback when it arrives.

You may have a corrupted Project File or have done damage to the FCP Preferences. First, try trashing your FCP preferences. That should get FCP to open. If it opens but still has problems opening your project file go to your Auto Save vault and open the project from the time just before the crash. Then “save as” and overwrite your corrupted project file.

SOLUTION!
While looking again at the Flanders site, I found that they sell a Mini-HDMI to DVI cable to connect the 7D directly to the LM-0750W through the DVI Port. Brilliant! (no power supplies for an HDMI to HD/SDI converter!)I had not considered a DVI conversion but this seems to be the answer. And I still get HD/SDI for my other cams. Very nice. Anyone see a problem with this?
