  • Just put the date in the clip name as an easy workaround. In CS3, you can enter it with the Clip Data in the capture window.

How did you get the original VHS into CS3? I might be missing something here, but, what about transferring VHS to DV using analog in or pass through on your camcorder? This would avoid any intermediate formats. You would be transferring from analog to AVI.

I have had good results when presented with a similar problem. Premiere Elements will accept VOB files from a DVD but I would avoid the step from VHS to DVD if possible. With the Premiere Elements solution, sometimes the first VOB file is fine but if there are other VOB files such as 2 or 3, there can be a lip synch problem with those after number 1.

Take a look at the Dec 07-Jan 08 Streaming Media magazine. Ron Miller talks about Captivate 3 on pages 82-84 and Jan Ozer talks about Camtasia Studio 5 on pages 86-91. I am using Camtasia 5 and outputting Flash for web delivery- it works great so far. SmartFocus automatically adds zooms and pans depending on the position of the cursor.

I’m not sure about that scenario. In my opinion, the Black Magic Intensity or Intensity PRO looks like a good solution using HDMI but I don’t have hands-on experience with it. Maybe someone else can shed some light on this.

Since the Blue-ray versus HD-DVD battle appears to be coming to an end, I think the demand for HD will go up a lot faster than the past couple of years.

HDV cannot be displayed through the camera to an external monitor in the way that DV can. Take a look at a book called, “HDV Filmmaking” by Chad Fahs and read pages 93- 98, which starts with “Monitoring HD Video”. Also take a look at Blackmagic and AJA cards. In addition to what is described in the book, there are newer options using HDMI connections. Blackmagic Design is one manufacturer with the HDMI cards starting at $350. The HDMI output from your editing system outputs to an LCD with an HDMI connection.

One other suggestion- go to Google and enter, “monitor HDV”.

Let’s say you have a clip on the timeline and you want to remove a segment from the middle of the clip. If the clip starts at 1:00:00 and ends at 2:00:00, you might want to remove a segment between 1:30:00 and 1:45:00. Using the Razor tool, click on those two points to cut the clip at 1:30 and 1:45. Go back to the Selection tool, click on the part of the clip you want to remove, then right click, and choose Ripple Delete. All clips after that point move to the left and the gap is closed.

There are several other ways to do this, but this is one of the fastest.

I have used Lynda.com with an annual license. The options are: 25. per month, 250. per year, or 375. per year- premium subscription. You get access to everything in the library. This is a great resource. I have not used the Adobe training so I can’t comment on that.

I just noticed one more thing- you said in the first post that you are using modest frame sizes like 960 X 540. If it’s a standard DV project, CS3 is looking for a frame size of 720 X 480. If you bring in something unusual like 960 X 540 on the time line, it would have to render first before it could be played back smoothly. When you add a clip, do you see the red bar indicating that rendering is needed?

I’m running Premiere CS3 on a single processor HP laptop with 1G of RAM with no problems so there must be something going on with your PC. Go to Task Manager and look for applications and processes running that don’t need to be.
