    Looks good …

    thanks for the tip

  • These rules are always important to remember when dealing with firewire drives..

They have kept me out of a lot of trouble…

Golden Rule: Only ONE Firewire device can be supplying power when disconnecting or connecting a Firewire cable.

AFTER dismounting an external device that has been mounted in the Finder:

    1. Your computer is the ONLY device that can be powered up when disconnecting or connecting a Firewire device. The only exception is if the computer is off and the external device is powered up before you start your computer.

    2. ALWAYS power down external Firewire devices before disconnecting or connecting a Firewire cable from ANY DEVICE. This includes scanners and cameras using the non-powered mini iLink plug! In theory there is no power in the link, but there is power at the computer end and it seems to have the ability to screw things up if the device is on. The only exception is if the external device is Firewire powered by your computer (i.e. having no external device power or when there is no power switch such as an iPod or Memory Stick).

    3. NEVER connect/disconnect any self powered Firewire devices in a chain when ANY device in the chain is powered-up. You MUST turn off all devices in a chain before removing or adding a device. This again includes scanners and cameras.

    4. After dismounting an external drive, count to three before turning it off and disconnecting a Firewire cable. Sometimes, even though the disk icon is gone from the Finder, it seems the CPU is still in the process of dismounting the external drive. This may change with different versions of OS X, but you can see this in action sometimes when dismounting an iPod. There will be a beat difference between when the Finder thinks it’s dismounted and when the iPod thinks it’s dismounted. This gray area is when you get the warnings about not having removed a device properly, even when you did.

    5. Do a VISUAL check of all devices before connecting/disconnecting a Firewire cable to double check the power status of all devices that might be in a chain.

    6. If you get a warning about not having removed a device properly, reconnect it. If it acts sluggish (telltale sign is slowly displaying the contents of a folder), back it up immediately and reinitialize the drive. DO NOT write any more data to the drive. That can precipitate a complete drive failure.

    7. The more critical the data is on the external Firewire drive, the more likely it is you will accidentally break one of the rules above. If you have critical data, become fanatical to not be in a hurry, not to become distracted, and to say a silent prayer to the Firewire gods while your hand is still on the connector.

Just a thought but in DV Cam mode you can only record 40 or so minutes on a 60 min DV tape.

    I could be wrong….

  • the link to download project files seems to be broken….

    any chance for a fix??

    thanks

  • Move your quicktime pro 6 version out of the applications folder and it will not be affected by the upgrade to 7.

You will still be able to open files in QT6 and have the pro features.

  • I backup everthing with CCC to an external Firewire HD. Then booted from that External.

I then wiped the internal drive and booted from Tiger Install disk “C” Key during startup – Installed Tiger and then booted from Tiger 10.4. Repaired Permissions…. Then checked for Software updates and updated to 10.4.1 … Repaired permissions.

Then loaded all of FC5 Studio. took about 75 minutes. Repaired permissions and started playing with FC5.. assigned scratch disk locations and other prefernces – All went well. FC5 was stable and running well. I opened a couple of old project and everything looked good. I chose “Good” for the quality of the update of the projects.

Then I “migrated” just my applications from the external drive. Had to enter a couple of SN for some of the apps but other than that it went smoothly. The next thing I did was copy over files from my users folder on the backup drive. – iTunes song and iPhoto’s pictures into my new Users folder. Then I opened “Mail” and imported my old mailboxes from 10.3.9, I kept the Backup of 10.3.9 hooked up during the .
Ran “Cocktail” after I had downloaded the new Tiger version and was off and running…. NO PROBLEMs… Smooth Running “Knock on Wood”

I have completed two spots yesterday and today and I can report that FC5 works just great. I really like Soundtrack pro. I exported a couple of audio files out of FC as aiff’s – I did not export the files directly to STP in FC because that would have created a huge audio file – and did a very nice job of cleaning up a little background noise.

If you have not seen it take a look at the demo…

I was a little taken back by the new look of the “Log and Capture” The audio only functions to select Mono/Stereo were a little confusing for me… I have taken the books home to read over the long weekend..

I printed the spots out to Beta and had a wonderful time with the whole thing. I usually plan about a week to move into a new system… this took me 2 days…

    G5 – Duel – 2.5g Ram – Sony DSR-25

    Have fun…

May 25, 2005 at 2:14 am in reply to: Any Positive Reports FC5 and Tiger???

Thanks Michael, I could not agree with you more.

In our business we only hear about it if there is a problem. If no problem we rarely hear anything.
    No News is Good News…

I was hoping to get some feedback on success stories with FC5 on 10.3.9 and Tiger to help me deside about which OS to install on.

I’ve heard of several setups with Tiger and FC5 working O.K. – still a little early to feel comfortable.

Not being a patient person I went ahead and wiped the drive and did a clean install of Tiger, updated to 10.4.1, repaired permissions and then installed FC5 and repaired permissions again.

All is well. But as with all of us, I’ll be doing tests and trying out features in the weeks to come.

I’m got a simple 30 second spot due next week so that will be a great opportunity to do a test drive.
