I had similar problem with a Sony DSR-390P camera but in the end it was a conflict between a Matrox RTX.100 card and the N-Force chipset on my motherboard.
I still got the occaisional black capture window but restarting the PC restores functionality.
I also had the same issue with a DELL workstation and this was caused by Windows PnP getting in the way of the capture software. Even though Windows was instructed never to take any action when the camera was plugged in, it always grabbed the camera and prevented PPro from capturing – it also did the same with Avid NewsCutter. Similar to your issue when the this happened, no application could capture from the camera. In the end DELL suggested a registry tweak that fixed it. I don’t remember what that change was though sadly.

Ooops, forgot to mention that the book in question is also on your CD as a PDF file.
Cheers.

Mmm, M o o o!
Just had the same when I tried.
The manual you need should be in your MC kit. It’s titled Avid Media Composer and Film Composer – Getting Started Guide for Video Editing.
It may be that the site is down right now.
Cheers,
Richard.

You’ll need to check with your IT folks first but you may be able to create a new local user account on your machine and try that. It’s not that unusual to have a corrupt Windows user account on your PC when working in a networked environment. I could be something as simple as a registry entry that leads to this type of issue.
Whenever we had issues the same as this it, it was always the Windows user account that was screwed in some way. Re-creating the user account always cleared it. The Avid user profiles were saved to a LANShare and these seemed trouble free.

Are you running on a MAC or PC?
I’ve seen this before on a PC several times but that was due to a corrupt Windows user account. If you’re running on a PC you could try creating a new user account and running your Avid software from there.

If you want to use your Avid software at home, you’re best to get a PC that is qualified to run the software. In most cases that is a high-end HP workstation XW8400 or XW4400. DELL workstations also work but you need to check the specs first on the Avid website.

The tutorial isn’t a standalone application, rather it is a 20:1 media version that you need to load and play from the timeline.
Follow this link and then page 22 for installation details.

Have you updated your video card drivers recently? Usually the culprit.

What machine PC/Mac? are you using and more importantly what video card do you have? The video card doesn’t need to fast but it does need to support hardware based video overlay and that generally means using an Nvidia card. Some ATI cards work but many of them don’t.

Hi again Renato,
Your English is fine and easy to read!
Unless you’re going to capture analogue video there’s no need for any other capture card. The Firewire 1394 interface is all you’ll need when using DV.
Capturing to MS AVI, QT or any DV format through virtualy any DV codec will give you the same quality at DV25. What is important though is capturing into the native format of your editing software. This way you’ll retain the most detail when adding effects or mixes and outputting back to tape.
There’s next to no difference between the Pinnacle CODEC and any other at this resolution. The real difference is when you output to MPEG2 for DVD use. Here the codec does make a difference although you’ll often see little difference at DV25 (MiniDV, DVCAM and DVCPro).
Hope this is all makes sense for you. If not, let us know as there are many experienced people in these forums that can give you a hand when you need it.
Cheers,
Richard.
