    You might have problems upgrading to CS4 down the road. I don’t know if they let you upgrade an academic version for the regular price… better check with Adobe.

    Maybe try a displacement map using a Fractal noise layer. Do a search for displacement map or for a flag.

    I didn’t even think of using Vegas along with dingbats. I did accomplish it using a couple precomps and the echo effect. But that seemed render heavy so I’ll test the vegas way as well.

    Are you using CS3? If so, I’d precomp your Keyed footage and add a stroke layer style to the precomp. Or you could use the old way and add an effect/stylize/glow and adjusts the parameters: Glow Based on-Alpha, Composite Original-On Top. Change Color A and B to same color and adj. the Threshold, Radius, and intensity to your liking.
