  • How do I add a stroke to chromakeyed actor?

I want to create a nice fat outline around a chroma-keyed actor. I tried the 3D stroke, but it only goes on the mask I have created (he wasn’t properly position on the green-screen so I had to mask out part of the image). I have tried with the check box off and on for mask, but it doesn’t create the stroke around the actor. How can I go about doing this?

You may be able to use Auto-trace to create a single mask around the actor and then apply the Stroke effect to that mask.

If you’ve got another mask on the layer, just be sure to target the correct mask (the one auto-traced around the actor) with the Stroke effect in the Effect Controls panel.

Aharon Rabinowitz shows using Auto-trace to create a mask around an actor as part of a color-keying procedure in his super-tight junk mattes tutorial. The purpose is a little different, but some of the steps that he shows may help you.

Are you using CS3? If so, I’d precomp your Keyed footage and add a stroke layer style to the precomp. Or you could use the old way and add an effect/stylize/glow and adjusts the parameters: Glow Based on-Alpha, Composite Original-On Top. Change Color A and B to same color and adj. the Threshold, Radius, and intensity to your liking.

No, I am using 6.5 right now, with a trial of Cs3.
