Panasonic told us in the early development stage of the HVX200 that the reason they could do what they did was with P2 there are no heads (HD heads) in the camera. The HD head drum assembly costs them something like $13,000.00 to manufacture ( I think that is varicam). The AJ-1400 has such a hi def head system for writing to tape. HDV decks in comparison are cheap to make because of the highly compressed data stream and mini dv style construction. The AJ-1400 is a big improvement over the 1200 as it has the HDSDI and firewire built in, hence a big cost reduction over the previous model. It seems Panny is trying to be very realistic with their pricing.

As you know Sony has dropped it’s production of SSM and PVM lines of crt monitors in favor of pursueing the LCD technology. Sony CRT HD monitors are unlikely to come down in cost as they are made soley for a narrow market base although the HD input cards have finally come down (from $4200.00 to $1500.00) Panasonic is offering some great HD monitoring solutions with their LCD monitors at very compeditive prices. LCD technology is constantly improving.

You could ask “Achromatic Diopter vs. Achromatic Close-up Lense, what’s the difference?” also besause the term Achromatic is used as an adjective here to describe the characteristics of the lens. An (A-chromatic) lens focuses red and blue visible light at the same point and therefore it is basically free of color bias. It does not introduce any color of it’s own into the mix (of the light that is passing through it) Cheap lenses will alter the hue of color passing through and perhaps distort it also.
FYI – another type of lens (APO-CHROMATIC) lenses focus all three primary colors on the same point. They can be double the price or more, than a standard lens as special types of glass are required to produce them and they are finished to finer tolerances.

When I purchased the fcp 5 suite upgrade, I installed it on a tiger system and was prompted for the original serial number for a full version (I think at the end of the install). I decided to upgrade my 1st version of fcp ver.1.0 and all it took was the serial number. That was a while back but I’m sure that’s how it went. My fcp upgrade package was the 699.00 one. Perhaps if you were constantly upgrading, 1.25-2; 2-3; 3-4.5; 4.5-5, you wouldn’t have had to buy the $699.00 upgrade and it works differently. I’d just try installing the upgrade and see if it prompts you for a serial number and avoid installing the earlier version.

life goes on… We’ve all been hit this way on laptops, hard drives, memory etc. often enough. You have to have work ready before purchasing equipment nowadays because it depreciates as soon as you hit the power switch. The trick is buy when you need it and work it.
Remember a year and a half ago (search posts) we were all saying “wow, if we could get a camera that does all that for $6000.00, that would be too awesome!” Back then the list price for the HVX200 and 2 – 4gig cards was $9999.00! Today it is $5300.00. There’s still nothing like it on the market, frame by frame HD – DVCPRo50/25 switchable, and not to mention dv on tape, the best just got better!
If you were going to get a P2 card you’d be better off buying in the US but if you were not planning to buy the P2 media right away the Canada deal is pretty nice. $1000.00 in the pocket is pretty nice, even if it is CND funds.
Remember when Panasonic slashed the cost of P2 from about $2300.00 to $1600.00 and the street price is now about $1200.00. One thing for shore, when Panasonic cuts a price, they don’t mess around! This ain’t nickels and dimes here! -

Last time I looked the HVX was about $5300.00 at B&H and now it includes a free 8GB P2 card. You should be able to get an HVX and 3 – 8GB p2 cards for $7500.00!

Chapter markers are easy enough to re-adjust, delete or add in DVDSP so finish in your fcp timeline at final edit and make any changes in dvdsp.

It should be the same process as ntsc. Your monitor will dispay either alternately (depending on the input cards installed). Just display the Pal bars in the drop down menu.

What deck? are you going through a capture card? The more details of your particular system will help others spot an issue. You could trash your preferences. The easiest way is google “fcp rescue” and download the free app from Anders Pettersen.

I hope you didn’t buy off the internet, I’m thinking the dealer may have already submitted the rebate. I hope this is not the case but it just crossed my mind after reading this post.

This is currentl $46.00 CND. I paid $39.99 CND a little while ago on sale but it is still very cheap.
