maybe this should be a DVDSP question, but here it is. i set chapter markers on the FCP timeline, and they “transfer” to DVDSP (via Compressor) with no problems. just for a test, i tried setting chapter markers on the clips themselves (still within the timeline), but no chapter markers then show up in DVDSP. the only reason i was considering doing this was that once i’ve set some chapter markers in FCP, if they markers are on the timeline and i scoot the clips either way, the markers don’t come along for the ride, whereas if i put the markers on the clips, they WILL come along for the ride (when scooting) but don’t come along for the ride when exporting/compressing.

is there a way to get the best of both worlds?

Not really, which is why chapter markers are the very last thing you do before you export. They’re not part of the editing process, but really part of the DVD authoring process, even though you can do inside FCP. But you should only do it when the program is locked.

    All the best,

Chapter markers are easy enough to re-adjust, delete or add in DVDSP so finish in your fcp timeline at final edit and make any changes in dvdsp.

Although you should do chapter markers last like Tom said, I highly suggest doing them in Final Cut Pro and getting them right there BEFORE you export.

In MPEG II, you can ONLY put chapter markers on I-frames. While you’re in Final Cut you can pick any frame you want for the chapter and Compressor will force that frame to be an I-frame when you export.

Once you get to DVD Studio Pro you can still change or add chapters, but at that point you’re stuck with the I-frames you’ve got. They should be about every half-second, on average, so you can always get close to what you want, but if you want a marker on an EXACT frame you might not be able to get exdactly what you want at that point.

I think this is a weakness in DVDSP. I know of other authoring packages that biuld a ‘frame index’ and therefore allow chapter markers on any frame in the mpeg.
