On the camera menu:
Go to Other Functions – PC Mode – set it to 1394 Device and press menu twice to exit.
Go to the back of the camera and press the MODE button, the MCR lamp lights up,
then hold the mode button down for about 5 seconds.

Sorry Bernard, I mistakenly though I was on the P2 forum when I replied above. (I just my brand new expresso machine hooked up and I’m on #2 americano and #2 latte, all doubles!) This or the dvd authoring forums should be fine to post in.
If all audio was captured with video on the same drives this shouldn’t happen. Try exporting as a self contained QT movie before encoding.

That’s total weird. Usually it is off or it’s on but to off in a few places and on in others is odd. Are all your audio files on the same drive?

It would solve a lot of picture sync issues down the road, that’s what I would do. Keep it simple.

Part of what makes FCP so complicated is it’s ability to work with so many formats and devices.
The other part is that it combines the work of about 8 professionals: compositors, animators, engineers, colorists, editors, compressionists, audio techs, dvd authors, da dah, da dah, da dah, each of whom have apprenticed for several years. If you use it with DV or HDV only (or what ever you are shooting only) in one consistent set up you will be able to define a simple work flow. It becomes more complicated when you start adding raid arrays and input cards etc. and doing work for other people.

There are more applications in the bundle which you can branch into eventually. Macs come with i-movie and i-dvd for simplicity which you can fall back on when you are starting out. It will be something you can grow into instead of something that will limit you.

Everyone has offered some very good advice so far. Video has had certain plateaus over it’s history ie: B&W to color; component video; analog to digital; and recently digital SD to digital HD. JVC’s introduction of the 1st HDV camcorder gave us all some hope to be able to work in HD at an affordable price but IMHO the HVX200 was the 1st camera to achieve this in an acceptable quality. Sony’s recent offering of the EX1 is another and likely Canon and JVC will follow with solid state media cameras (probably recording AVC format). Regardless of what other new offerings come along in the next decade the HVX200 will remain a useful investment for easily 5 years as the HD plateau will be a long one which requires a major commitment from consumers as well as the industry professionals. At this level it is what you do with the tools (and not the tools themselves) that will make the difference.

This is obviously a case of logic master minded by Apple. Apple would think if you were unable to boot up so couldn’t go on line and misplaced your manual and your software was on a Cd you would logically hold down the “C” key (for Cd).
However if your newer software came on a Dvd that would no longer work. A logical thinker would hold down the “D” key (for Dvd).

This could be the entire problem. As Wayne mentioned earlier HD lcd’s don’t display sd very well at all. Just go to a retail outlet and try to find an sd display beside an hd display and have them switch feeds from sd to hd. SD looks better on the sd monitor and looks crappy on the hd mon. but hd looks better on the hd monitor. Some dvd players do better at up-res-ing to hd than others. You could try different up-res dvd players at a retail outlet to see which works best for your discs and recommend that to clients who are displaying sd on hd monitors.
Unfortunately our clients are not all technically savvy but they know what looks good. They will blame us if what we give them does not match their expectations. We have to work with them and provide something that will work for them. Depending on clients needs you may be able to provide them with a QT self contained H.264 version on disc for them to play off their laptop or upload the movie to a server they could access through the new Apple-TV.

That all sounds right. When I blew my FW board I couldn’t get anything through the deck as I recall. PCI firewire cards are cheap though so for $30 – $40. you can try that if you don’t get anywhere. Are your av settings correct. It is best to use “easy settings” for normal dv and of coarse you must use firewire ntsc or pal and not firewire basic. It sounds like a setting is off in your preferences.
If your tape is dvcam it should play slower in your canon which I believe is only dv. DV tape runs slower so you get an hour on the tape as opposed to dvcam which runs tape faster so you only get 40 minutes from a tape. If you played a 40 minute dvcam program in a dv device where it played out in 1 hour the 40 minute program would be in slo mo. Perhaps the tape was recorded at 24 fps.
