Is there a prize for the longest thread?
When you think about the history of Apple Computers these have to be the golden years. I don’t think macs ever been more popular or had as big a market share. To think Apple would jeopardize this success with their line of computers to pursue a short term volatile market like cell phones and ipods seems unlikely. Where will iphones and ipods be in 5 years?
Well they say everything has a price and what’s good for the shareholders is good for the corporation but I think if Apple sells off their pro apps they may as well go for the gusto and sell it all because that could be the final result anyway if they just sell the SW. If they do sell they should get a lot of cash for it and I hope they give us all time to purchase our last mac work station with the latest version of FCS to carry us for the next 2 or 3 years.

The one significant change I recall was moving to YUV rendering from RGB around FCP 2.
Thanks for posting the photo of the macromedia disc! I recently watched a program on an auction of Johnny Cash memorabilia in which items went for astronomical amounts. I wonder what you could fetch with your disc on ebay! 🙂

Apple sells ProApps because each one needs a box usually running from $2800 to $4500. Add a few more BTO options and monitors and that can from $4000 to $6000 or MORE! Maybe some of the bigger shops are buying Xserves too at $3000 and up. “
While this is all true there seems to be a perception that the pro apps are a lost leader to bolster hardware sales. While I am not an economist I still contend that the apps are themselves profitable. Consider the cost of each component in a mac pro including the case, design of the architecture and assembly and distribution. Compare that to the cost of producing 8 LBs. of paperbacks and 1/2 dozen dvd’s that sell for $500.00 (FCS upgrade) and multiply by a million = 500 million. (I personally have spent about $4500.00 on FCP related SW and upgrades from Apple since 2000). The only real expense for software is R&D really, whereas to build a computer a lot of money is spent on buying individual components that go into it and making the assembly line as well as R&D.
This is a rough estimate of the money involved. Although I personally have spent about $4500.00 on FCP related SW and upgrades from Apple since 2000 and another $14,000.00 on hardware (strictly Apple items and I consider myself a bit of a scrooge). That adds up to $18,500.00 for 1 of those 1,000,000 FCP seats that exist in the world. And yes the FCP SW sold me on the hardware and I never said it doesn’t. I’m just saying I think there is reasonable profit in the software itself IMHO.
It seems to me Adobe started the SW bundle scheme which has helped revive Premier and it would seem Apple had to follow suit. In doing so the cost of these apps has fallen hard and no doubt has eaten into the profit margin. Still there is tremendous potential to profit from the apps given the low cost of physically producing it and the high volume of licenses sold.

I’m not sure if either Apple or Avid will appear again at Broadcast India next fall and neither of them show up on the 2008 CCBN exhibitor’s list for end of March but you have to ask yourself “Where’s the Money???” With the 2008 Olympics soon to commence CCBN is sure to be a happenin event. Predicted growth of digital broadcast in China by 2010 is astronomical. How many FCP seats can you fit into the new CCTV building in Beijing?

Good advice Jan, I would add – you should contact someone higher up than the sales department you’ve been dealing with and explain the situation. They should be made aware.
In 72 I bought a brand new Norton Commando motorcycle and quickly learned how much tweeking and tinkering was required to keep it operational. I determined it was going to cost me a fortune for service at the dealer or I would need to learn how it ticked. I requested a shop manual from the dealer and was put off for months and months until I finally wrote the factory in the UK. I received a letter back telling me they had sent some to my dealer but again I was turned away. I wrote the the Factory again and received a letter back stating there was one with my name on it sent to the dealer and would I go get it. I was instructed to take the letter with me and if I was turned away again I was to show the manager/owner the next paragraph which instructed him to phone this official immediately. Sure enough I was turned away again from the dealer. Anyway he got awfully red faced as he read the letter, disappeared in the back and came out with a manual that had a bit of grease on it. He told me it was the only one they had which I’m sure was a big lie.
I dealt with the owner/manager personally from day one. His dealership was also a Suzuki dealer and he personally raced suzuki motorcycles. He belittled the Norton motorcycle to me in the past also but only after I had bought one. It pays to go to the top sometimes as in this case the Norton Manufacturer was being very poorly represented.

In a small town where everyone knows everyone else’s business you run into situations where a salesman has a good client who is well established and does enough business with them to become more or less friends. If some new guy shows up on the scene and starts getting some business of the established company it wouldn’t be unheard of for the salesman friend to screw around the new guy in support of his big spending friend. In a big city no one knows one another that well for these occurrences so I hope this isn’t reminiscent of your situation.
How about this? In August when the Panasonic order came in and your card was unpacked, a film maker ran in in a panic and desperately needed a 16GB P2 card. The salesman thought Hmmm, I can sell this one and just reorder one for Konk. But then in September when the Panasonic order came in another desperate film maker rushed in in the same predicament. Again the salesman thought well, this Konk person isn’t here, I can put him off and make an extra sale. By now they are thinking, well the 64Gb cards should be along soon, lets hold this order in case they do show up and with this confirmed sale we won’t get stuck with the old 16GB stock.
Enough of this speculation, I’m going to bed before I get just as ridiculous as this situation. To wait this long for a paid for 16GB P2 card is unfathomable to me though. I’d love to hear what happened. I still think they should upgrade you to a 32GB card after all this.

Wow, that’s some video! I noticed the grass seems taller just out of range of the helicopters. Can you mow grass with these things? Can the tail rotter be used for lawn edging? It sure looks like it in the video. I’m ready to get into the landscaping business. 🙂

Your link to a sample video didn’t work for me but it sounds like you would be up against strong back lighting (while aiming at the sky) and then must deal with normal available light when you have ground as the back ground.
For the latter, you can use auto but for back lit sky shots you have to let the sky wash out and expose for the model only. Get the model to hover 10 feet off the ground or have someone hold it up high in the direction you’re shooting in and zoom into to it so only the body fills the entire frame. Now set your exposure on manual so it is correctly exposed. You can zoom out and shoot like this but the sky will wash out for the sky shots. The model will remain properly exposed as long as you always shoot in the same direction or the light doesn’t change (sun goes behind a cloud or actually sets etc.).
Try shooting with late direct evening sun from behind you. That should yield the best results. That way the sun becomes the main light or strongest light and sky as well as ground type back grounds will film well.
The only other way to shoot it is to have someone focus a powerful spot light on the model chopper to illuminate it enough to match the exposure to the sky.

Oh oh, sounds like a trip to a repair center. Maybe you could email Panasonic tech support first to see if there is anything else you can do. Was your firmware set for 16Gb cards? You could try pulling the battery, then power up with the menu and/or mode button held down. ;-/
