“Eh? I come here for the comments, not the ads.”

And yet you leave us with such insight…..how charitable.

The MXO has DVI, Component, S-video, Composite, and SDI out capability. You’d probably want to go with the DVI.

In terms of using two 42″1080P HDTV’s as monitors…if you have those 42″ displays anywhere closer than, say, five feet to your position, you’ll be doing a lot neck-craning as you work, the refresh rate may not be the same as a computer monitor, which could give you headaches, and if you move it 7-10 feet away from you, you’ll basically get the same visual size as a 24-30″ monitor right in front of you anyway.

But if you have the space to mount one 42″ set above for viewing/screening, heck, why not? I wish I did. I think clients would probably generally prefer something more comfortably eye-level, though.

Although it would look pretty darn cool! You should get a big keyboard and mouse to go with it.

How about…one 30″ ACD as your main monitor, then mount the Westinghouse above and back for both extended desktop and HD monitoring? You’d ideally need a Matrox MXO or AJA/Blackmagic setup for the monitoring, though.

My Logitech MX400 laser mouse stopped being able to move the cursor in FCP 5.1.4. I trashed prefs and restarted, and everything was back to normal. Hasn’t happened since.

You’ll have bigger screens, but less overall resolution than the Apple dislays, so you’ll actually be able to fit more visual info at 1:1 on the Apple Cinema 30″displays./…plus there are gamma issues et al in terms of computer display vs. TV/Monitor.

Is it sauce for chicken, or does the sauce taste like chicken?

I’ve had this happen a few times when I had a lot of tracks going…to me it’s a sign that I have to delete old renders, dump preferences, do a quick disk maintenence, and restart…then it’s usually fine.

Meant to include that Idon’t have both computers working on the same thing/rendering…just switching and transporting over ethernet. It helps a lot when I have to render somethign out in AE and want to keep editing on the other computer.

I do this exact thing between my G5 anbd Mac Pro. I’ve heard of problems with eth Gefeb models, and an Iogear one I tried was DOA. I currentlly use an Avocent Switchview for both DVI and USB. Works fine.

    Ahhh…the good ‘ol days. 😉

I remember when I was in NYU back in the early-mid 90’s…there were only two of these things called the AVID in the school, both owned by professors who didn’t know how to use them. Heck with that…give me a six-plate Steenbeck, a roll of tape, and a razor blade, and I’ll call you when you’re movie’s done. 😉 Picked up AVID and ProTools in the field (there were none of those cute instructional mini-academies at the time, that I can remember), then started working for a company that swicthed from AVID to this darling thing called the SPHERE (Accom Stratasphere, evolved from the CUBE as I recall). Good interface and software, absolutely HORRIBLE hardware. It got to a point where I’d be spending 20 inutes out of every hour rebooting/disc maintenance/recovery. You can imagine my all-nighters right before delivery deadline. Loads of fun. Just as I was leaving the company in early 2001, FCP 2 (I think) was out, and the first thing that hit me was it resembled a mix betwen the two, AVID and SPHERE. But at the time, being more ‘in-the-box’ and all, it seemed more pro-sumer than professional. BUT…I could have it on a Power Mac…and since I was going freelance, it seemed like an economical way to at least start off. They switched to FCP about a month after I left.

When I look at how reliable every FCP system I’ve worked on has been, along with the advances in computers…I want to bill them double-overtime for the countless hours I spent just getting the Sphere to work.
