crazy fun monitor question
Posted by Chris Baldwin on April 11, 2007 at 9:44 pmIs there anything to say that you couldn’t spend $2k on two of the Westinghouse 42″ 1080p HD Ready LCD TV which on 4/11/07 on woot are $1050…but can usually be found for $1300… and have 84 inches of FCP real estate rather than the same rpice pretty much for one Apple 30in display?
https://www.westinghousedigital.com/details.aspx?itemnum=44
Is that possible to set these up as a display for Macs what about out of a Macbook pro? Are there better options?

April 11, 2007 at 10:03 pmYou’ll have bigger screens, but less overall resolution than the Apple dislays, so you’ll actually be able to fit more visual info at 1:1 on the Apple Cinema 30″displays./…plus there are gamma issues et al in terms of computer display vs. TV/Monitor.

April 11, 2007 at 11:20 pmYes, it’s all relative to the viewing distance. If you take a 1mb digital camera and take a headshot of your mate and then print out a 1X1.5″ passport photo, a 5X7″ print and a 40″ wall portrait, the 40″ print will look bad up close but hold the passport 10″ from your eye and place the 5×7 about arms length and the 40″ print about 20 feet away and in perspective they will look the same.
An apple or dell 30″ monitor does give you more real estate because the screen resolution is greater. 2560X1600 as opposed to 1920X1080. -

April 12, 2007 at 1:13 amAlthough it would look pretty darn cool! You should get a big keyboard and mouse to go with it.
😉
How about…one 30″ ACD as your main monitor, then mount the Westinghouse above and back for both extended desktop and HD monitoring? You’d ideally need a Matrox MXO or AJA/Blackmagic setup for the monitoring, though.

April 12, 2007 at 1:22 amthat’s actually not a bad idea though right?
I mean its a better than average set for someone to view an end product on anyways.
So you’d go DVI into both or does the MXO give it something else?

April 12, 2007 at 7:32 amThe MXO has DVI, Component, S-video, Composite, and SDI out capability. You’d probably want to go with the DVI.
In terms of using two 42″1080P HDTV’s as monitors…if you have those 42″ displays anywhere closer than, say, five feet to your position, you’ll be doing a lot neck-craning as you work, the refresh rate may not be the same as a computer monitor, which could give you headaches, and if you move it 7-10 feet away from you, you’ll basically get the same visual size as a 24-30″ monitor right in front of you anyway.
But if you have the space to mount one 42″ set above for viewing/screening, heck, why not? I wish I did. I think clients would probably generally prefer something more comfortably eye-level, though.

If I’m not mistaken, that Westinghhouse can be had for around 800 bucks, or maybe that was the 37″, which you could also look at. BTW I saw one of the big Westinghouse at Best Buy and maybe it was the feed, but it was not that great. Tell you what though, at Costco Home last month they had the Spectre 42″ for $999, and it was as good as any monitor of that size I’ve seen.
