I don’t believe FCP 5 had ProRes fully … meaning it only had one choice that was buggy.

I recommend an upgrade … or like Dave stated … convert the file in Compressor into something else that your system can read.

Yeah like Arnie said … to Add, I would go with a PNG Graphic File from Photoshop, for the renders take less time than a TIF.

I was also thinking have you checked your Sequence Settings are the same.

    Whenever it looks smaller … it could have been copied from a 640×480 / 720 x 480 Timeline to an HD Timeline 1440 / 1920 ….

That’s happened to me before. … It’s a common mistake.

Hmmm … now you say you are doing some of the tests on a Power MAC …… well those can’t have FCP 7.

So I assume you have FCP 6.

I use XDCam Footage from a Sony X3 Camera and they work fine … I had this issue once … but I updated the software and threw away the preferences. And it worked well after that. … I did that on a MacPro with FCP 6.

Try Loading a new clip to a new Hard Drive and Open a New Project and try that one for a shot. If it works then your Hard Drive the files are on … might have hit a bad sector on the hard Drive.

    Good Luck.

Oh and just a thought … it could also be the Graphics Cards can’t handle it …….

One more thing … If you play the files in Basic Quicktime does it act up also?

November 18, 2009 at 3:10 am in reply to: Unable to capture HDV footage in FCP 7

There are few things I can suggest:

-On the camera make sure you set the camera to be able to Send Video via Firewire as an output … I have a Sony Z7u and I have to tell it to see the firewire for output.

-With the Camera on VCR and plugged in = Go to View on the top menu of FCP then scroll down to the bottom and one of the chooses will pop up “REFRESH VIDEO DEVICE” … it will relook for your camera.

-If the setting of your camera is set to OFF DOWNCONVERT … then make sure you are in HDV mode in the capture window. (Audio/Video Settings)
-If on DOWNCONVERT … then check you are in DV mode (Anamorphic or not depending on what you want.)

These are things I go through when the camera doesn’t see FCP or Vice-a-Versa.

The Cow … also has many DVDs for training that you can purchase … if I remember there was a discount going on for them also ……..

Some one know the link to give this guy?

Have you checked with Video Copilot? ? Andrew Kramer has some DVDs for sale that are geared towards beginners.

There are lots … what about Lynda.com?? That is a training course from beginners to Intermediate training … and you can run at your own pace all online.

  • Does it also happen when you use Overwright or Insert edit? ? because I also havn’t experienced this.

And I agree with Michael Gissing, upgrade your software. Usually takes out alot of bugs that Apple has found … or any software company.

November 17, 2009 at 11:46 pm in reply to: stuttering problems in FCP

I would do the conversion in Compressor as oppose to Final Cut doing the conversion.

Are you creating Quicktime Movies as a stand alone MOV or are you using Quicktime Conversion? ? That also makes a difference.

And to even check more … if you load the footage alone on it’s on sequence with the codec set to read it, does it stutter? Because if it does you might have an issue with the footage it self.

    Good luck

November 17, 2009 at 11:43 pm in reply to: Flickering Footage

No I am not using PAL footage on a timeline. And usually when I get footage that is PAL I have a dupe-house convert it for us … don’t care to wait for that and waste editing time.

The footage we have that is having Fluorescent flicker was because the shooter who shot with our NTSC cameras didn’t change the shutter speed to compensate for the different frequency in the Australian region.

Tom–> yes the plug in worked wonders and it is actually pretty cheap to get a license for multiple computers too.

Thanks Arnie for the suggestion. 2 Thumbs Up man.

Get a faster computer ……. just kidding.

Are you editing an SD timeline or HD timeline? ?

If you are doing the SD Timeline I recommend you down convert your HD footage … it will take you a day or less to media-Manage and downconvert all of your HD footage … but well worth it in the end.

SD on HD timeline … honestly I haven’t felt the render times to be too long … but if you wanted. You could put all your SD footage on a 16:9 sequence and Export them to UPCONVERT HD … then put it back on your HD timeline … again about a day to do … but worth it.

    Good luck.
