  • You will need to get the Miranda doo-hickey thingie to embed audio and timecode in the HD-SDI signal out. You have to do the same thing with XDCAM HD when going HD-SDI out.

We’re debating the same thing. The Canon XL-H1 combined with the Wafian is looking like a feasible option.

XDCAM HD is still mpeg2 and not meant for editing – and must be converted to Cineform’s editing codec which is 4:2:2 10 bit (or something like Apples intermediate codec.) That’s the downside of XDCAM HD and HDV in general, in my opinion. The long GOP.

  • You can do that with Serious Magic’s Ultra.

Canon H1 – Great picture! You may not use HD-SDI from the get-go…but you will sooner or later for, say, 4:2:2 keying to a Wafian or HD deck.

  • Did they put a time limit on it? What format are the other movies in at the site? Windows Media? Quicktime? Flash?

If they are doing the encoding, encode you mPEG2 to their window size, that will help get the file size down.

  • It sounds like you have to shorten the movie and lower the variable bit rates. Are they taking 10 or 15 of these files and making one DVD for presentation at a meeting? That’s what it sounds like.

You mention a website in your title. Why? If it’s for the web, you certainly don’t want to use Mpeg2.

Sony mentions that every 2-3 years the laser must be replaced – do they mention in the manual a ‘laser-time’ in hours for replacement – does the camera keep a record of that time – equivalent to drum-time?

I imagine the laser burns wider and wider pits until it effects the next track on the disk. Then it must be replaced.

I think I also read somewhere that the replacement is a do-it-yourself operation with a fairly inexpensive calibration tool.

Yes, each time you hit record you create another file of DVCAM 25. Scene detection is inherent in the fact that each take is a file.

And — chroma key is definitely cleaner than what we’ve shot on Varicam.

Amazing! Do you have any examples up on the net yet? To grab a key like that, are you using cineform or some other codec, or the mpeg file straight up?
