Watch for interlace problems on the so-labeled DVX100a side of the split screen. It’s a mess. The HDV labeled side looks great by comparison. A major screw-up. The big tip-off is in the scene before – the HVX200* footage was the same color as the ‘HDV’ labeled side in the split screen. What are they selling? 😉 (Jan, have you paid these guys yet?)
*Varicam, whatever flavor of DVCPRO100

I quess one quality of a great DVD on a HD camera would be clarity.
Take a look at some of the Apple footage from their new Aperture site.
https://www.apple.com/aperture/profiles/?burbridgeIt’s amazingly clear (and large) for a internet stream. (Looks like about 15fps)
In contrast the Windows Media version on the HVX-200 DVD is running at a 5 meg rate and still doesn’t look as good.
I assume the footage in the Apple movies on Aperture was shot with a Varicam. It is simply outstanding.

Hi Phil,
Dust IN the lens seems unlikely. They are pretty well sealed against that and humidity. But after cleaning the outside and it’s still showing up – yeah, I would send it in for a replacement. There shouldn’t be any dust inside the lens. Taking apart a lens and cleaning it is not going to be cheap.

Shirt tail and a little spit does the trick. I always shoot with a UV filter on to protect the camera lens. Seriously, I carry a lens tissue and cleaner and clean the filter in the field. 3 bucks at a camera store.

Right – my point was – you shouldn’t expect to deliver a Windows Media file for broadcast. They are going to want it on tape with lower compression schemes.

The flash encoder plug-in does not work with Vegas. The new Flash 8 includes the encoder. FLV files are the flash video files. SWF files are the published videos and contain extra metadata, etc.
-
Also, can I encode to HD media by choosing one of the HD presets in Vegas?
Yes. Very easy to do and looks great on a monitor.
HD downcoverted to SD for DVD looks great too.
If you wanted to deliver for broadcasting, you would probably be asked for a D-5 master tape or something along that line of reduced compression.
-
No, it will be SD – you can get HD on a DVD disc as files by encoding to Windows Media HD. But that will not play on a set-top DVD player. Yet.

The P2 card on the camera becomes a hard drive when hooks via usb or firewire. I don’t think you can fill them up sequencially though.

October 4, 2005 at 2:23 am in reply to: Effects and color corection better in uncompressed HDIt brings up the BIG problem for HD editors, namely, if you are not monitoring (at least part of time on a large HD display) you will not see the problems until after delivery. It is about detail after all – and man-o-man, are the problems ever going to show! When you’re color correction starts looking like a special effect – you know you’re in trouble.
