We took the Sin City stuff off our website but I’m sure there are still bits out there with what we discovered with clipping when working on the development for this project (There are only a few articles that mention this problem). With 4:4:4 you can not assume everyone is doing it the correct way, even at a hardware level.(there is a huge debate as to what is the correct way, once again proving that film and video are very different)
We have discovered that some products will clip without letting you know and we have taken the clip or no clip option approach rather than just clipping as so many of our projects are out to film where broadcast levels have no place.
Hopefully that is enough for you to narrow the issue down and to help you solve your problem.

Yes the luminance issued showed up in a 444 project we helped out with last year, without pointing fingers we did discover what the reason or problem was and I’m sure there is some documentation out there for anybody doing a search. Nobody wants to step up to the plate and admit who’s at fault over this one but there are several solutions out there to get around this.
444 is not overkill at all in the right environment and quickly becoming the norm.

We are not seeing this issue on our end with the AJA hardware itself. We have seen issues of frame offsets due to latency in items such as routers, other applications and decks.(we built in a method of dealing with that) and although it’s not often an issue, it is out there. Not sure if your going thru any gear that could be the culprit but it may be worth a try.
I’m guessing your using FCP by the G5.
The hardware is solid, sometimes it’s just everything else in the mix that screws things up. I would like to also note the AJA hardware is running under Linux with our own app and driver. I know users are Mac based here and I try to only chime in when hardware seems to be the question. Hopefully to give you a different perspective of how the same item can work entirely different under different circumstances to help narrow down your issues.

Yes the roughest we have been in and it took many days for my legs to work right. I’m just wondering how the juggler managed his show that last day, I guess he passed on the chainsaw and Knife bit 🙂
We are already researching our cruise for the same time next year and now that I know they give Dramamine shots down in the sick bay the ride should be a bit more fun.

The Kona 3 board supports this 🙂
This is one of the items we have built into RaveHD software to go along with our keyer product. I would think this an easy task for Apple to build into FCP with some nudging.

Sorry for the delay. Christmas and all.
We support our own drivers which explains why we see this support. We look at all the AJA boards the same, using the same driver and we don’t always look at the individual aspects of each of the boards (Kona vs Xena).

I triple Walter, AJA provides a professional product that just happens to be used by some consumers. You will find every professional post house using the AJA products while yes, some use others, most rely on the AJA name. There are lots of reasons but the bottom line is that they engineer a solid product.
We have been developing with the AJA hardware for a long time (prior to an HD board) and can say the hardware has always done everything they have stated :). I can’t speak for how Apple puts the hardware to work in their apps but we are 100% satisfied.

You will be safe with using the Kona3 for this workflow. We have many clients using the same hardware daily. They all are working pretty much 24.
In a nutshell:
The board can add the 2:3 on the fly for output so the 24 frame material (or whatever frame rate) can exist on the drives as such. In our case we work natively DPX, so I can’t speak how FCP handles this. Essentially all we are doing is passing the 24fps DPX frames to the board and with the correct register settings, whala….you get what you need. Some of this relies on the software doing the pushing but for the most part they are all using the hardware the same (or at least I would hope).
The board if used properly will not effect the image coming in or going out of it. In otherwords the image you expect to go in will come out. Now of course you can manipulate that image if you like with the many features the board offers you.
