Actually if you send me your email I will send you a few frames which may help narrow a few things down.
We wrote our own driver for the AJA boards and again do nothing to the image. I do have some 720 stuff that we captured in as both 8bit and 10bit.

Sure, what do you wish it to be scaled with.(we don’t use FCP). I do remember reading your thread. I don’t think I have any 720 content on our systems, pretty much all 1080 (both 8 & 10bit) and it’s all been captured over SDI, not FW and no DVCproHD.
We and our customer have manipulated images coming thru the AJA boards pretty much every way you can think of with nothing like this. Which is why I’m pretty sure it’s the combination and not just the AJA hardware.
Anyway let me know what exactly you need and I will send you a few frames.

Neil comments below, obviously he’s not considering RaveHD as a VTR. Get all the info before you listen to a single person, even me…………….
That’s less than 4 VTRs and lass then any other DDR with similar capabilities I’ve come across.

In 6 years we have never seen this issue using the AJA boards. We do encounter hot levels and do not limit the incoming video (the image is exactly what comes in). I would think this is a FCP/AJA issue, giving them a call should yield results.

We have testing multiple boards in a system but if we are talking uncompressed, dedicated units are the only option at the moment that I am aware of. The larger productions are syncing multi camera shots, with using one system as the TC generator (for our product, not sure how they are using others) and dedicated systems for each camera.

Anytime. It’s always nice to give a little insight as to what the big dogs are doing. I know I tend to be a bit vague on the answers sometimes, can’t divulge all that our clients are doing, only in respect to what we are providing.
It’s all a matter of workflow, no single answer will fit every scenario. We simply try to put as many options into the mix so there is no getting stuck “into one way”, seems to be the answer as every studio is using RaveHD in a different capacity.

In a high volume environment dedicated I/O storage will always prove to be less of a headache than sharing this between say 50-100 artists (I am talking about digitizing and laying off). Agreed that shared is the most flexible way, as data can be shared easily, but it is always not the most practical in every scenerio. I am only talking in regards to uncompressed material as DV is a different story altogether.
Sure we can digitize directly to the SAN, but now we are at the mercy of what the entire facility is also doing. For our customers workflows this is not an option for this function in the facility.
No argument if it’s worth it, which is why we are implementing it 🙂

The latest item we are working on is 2 arrays running different filesystems. This will allows us run one as a SAN, while the other continues to offer dedicated I/O. We have been running 2 filesystems on a single box (JFS and XFS) for awhile and don’t anticipate this to be an issue. Our fist tests/certification is with the ADIC stuff, which is what the Xsan uses. This is nice because we can pack up to 18TB in our boxes now, splitting the arrays in a variety of configs.
The point, shared storage is nice but dedicated I/O is a must (at least if you don’t want the headaches).

Yes there is more than one way to skin a cat….it all depends on how fast you want it done and how good of a job.
If you need to output then going the Kona route is what makes sense as you get it all and even a few things more. The up, down and cross convert are only a few things this board can do (in real time) that will make sense for any workflow and remember AJA products are professional, many of our clients won’t use anything else (and these are top studios worldwide).
For the price you can not go wrong. I remember just a few short years ago an HD board was 10K with none of these features…..AJA has really stepped up to the plate and continues to deliver top products.
Now if you are just looking for a software approach, there are some free apps on Linux that are very good. Check out Graphics Magik for a start. And you can’t go wrong with Shake and AE.
