Yes, it was done with 2D elements, the snow flakes give it more depth. But the nice thing abouth this one is that its an old technique but to acheve the same result you need a good feel for animation and compositing. That is the most important element in my openion.

You have to keyframe “Radius” of the forces. Play around with it. Basicly its the radius of the shatter. So when “0” the shatter is null.
