So, the first time I saw this spot i really enjoyed it
and thought it was pretty straight forward. Then, the
more I watched, I started to doubt how simple it was,
and now question if a 3D software was used? I can do
the whole 3D “Kid Stays in the Pic” effect, and
understand the snow is also adding to the depth, but
some shots (The stairwell in particular) just have so
much 3D depth, its astonishing if it is really created
only using 2D elements in 3D space.

    Any help appreciated.

I think it’s all pics using a particle system in A.E.

Here is the thing it’s more than just masking out the the guy and throwing him in 3d space. Take the fourth shot for example(with the boot as main focus) it appears both legs are in 3d space but the boot is in a different zspace than the left leg thus creating even more realistic movement.

That is my thought on it.

I checked it out a few times… definitely doable by “just” using 2d elements properly placed in Z space and matched to some fie camera moves..

not a quick and simple operation, but oh so sweetly doable in AE..

Agree with the rest. All looks pretty much 2.5D with some clean cut-outs. If you watch the stairwell by scrubbing frames back and forth you’ll see if doesn’t actually change perspective relative to itself confirming the cut-out. They also use a lot of cuts to keep things moving before you pick out the illusion. The technique is old, but what they have done with it is very clean and tight – I like it.

Yes, it was done with 2D elements, the snow flakes give it more depth. But the nice thing abouth this one is that its an old technique but to acheve the same result you need a good feel for animation and compositing. That is the most important element in my openion.

And the shots have to be set up with this technique in mind, yes?

yeah it’s definitely all still layers you can see the foggy air he breaths is digitally done if you look closely.

This is a really good commercial though.
