Ive just started using AE, and need some basic starting help..basically what im doing is I have 2 layers of text that fade in at different intervals as a movie intro title…after they both fully fade in, i want to use the shatter plugin to make it look like they explode out, which I can pretty much do by using the shatter with low gravity, and zomming the text past me after the initial shatter, but my problem, while being a stupid one, is that I cant seem to figure out how to set the starting point for the shatter effect..I want it to start about 4 seconds in, after the text fades in, but I cant figure out how..right now it just keeps starting at the beginning, so im getting a fade in explosion of text..

    thanks

You have to keyframe “Radius” of the forces. Play around with it. Basicly its the radius of the shatter. So when “0” the shatter is null.

Animate the strength and radius of the force fields or split your text layers – one for the fade, the other for the shatter.

You can precompose the text layer and on the new comp add a adjustment layer over, and apply the shatter to it. drag the layer just where you want the shatter take effect

this is a lazy approach that doesn’t take advantage of all of the controls in shatter. Shatter is a very simple plug-in once you realize that it is based on real world physics and all you have to do is animate the forces that make things shatter like depth, force and radius. It only takes a moment to learn how to use the plug-in. There are tons of tutorials out there.
