Very cool, Shane. I tried it and it not only worked as you described, but by offsetting the clips a pretty funky look comes up.

It also gives me a better understanding of some of this composite stuff.

Thanks! I now have a great workflow for my Windows clients.

Shane, this is interesting. So, are you saying you would use Compressor to create the H.264 mov, then use Streamclip to save-as (and re-wrap) to MP4?

I just tried that, and yes, the SaveAs [from H264.Mov to MP4] took seconds. Thanks!

I haven’t done any real quality comparisons between Streamclip and Compressor, but I have found Streamclip to be faster. (AVCHD-to-ProRes) Ralph

That seems to do the trick. I then choose H.264 as the compressor and the final file size is just like H.264.mov files.

    Thanks. Perfecto.

***Do you know if there a way to do this in Compressor? I can’t find a way to select the File Format: MPEG-4 AND ALSO choose something else as the compression (as in Streamclip). I’d rather use Compressor if I can…

    Great. Thank you,

February 12, 2012 at 2:24 am in reply to: Travel Light Kit?

    How about:
    Interviews:
Soft Key: Lowell Rifa – fast and helpful when you light alone.
    -or-
Soft Key: Photoflex Starlight, 500 watt or 1000
Fill: Photoflex or ? Pop-up reflector set – diffusion layer covered with removable layers of different kinds of bounce fabric.
Backlight: 150watt Arriflex fresnel. Use on an arm atop a stand.
    Background: 300watt Arriflex Fresnel
(Fill or modeling light as needed: 150watt Arri. For modeling, maybe add another diffusion and stand. [Modeling light is sourced behind subject, on fill side, to add contour to face])

Need scrim kits for each light. a dimmer may not be a bad idea. Yes it may shift the color a bit but no one really sees that. And a warm backlight or fill can be… well… nice.

    Scene Lighting:
Use all of above. If needed, you can remove the diffusion on the softbox to provide mucho light.
Maybe add a 650 watt or another 300watt if needed for larger areas.

Stands: Go light. Photoflex are light and have been fine for me, for 6 years plus. **Make clamps of different sorts with light studs attached. Go to Harbor Freight (yes, it’s a cult) for various kinds of clamps. These will often allow you to place lights where stands can’t go and even taek the place of taking an extra stand.

Bring gels and diffusion and clips clamps tape and gum.

Consider having one bag for stands, etc. and one for light heads, etc. Makes for two bags but both are each much lighter. I’m 59 yrs old.

So there. That’s my minimum kit and it’s worked for me in town and on the road.

There are so maany ways to skin this particular cat. How you shop (yes to craigslist and ebay and patience), who you run into, your won strengths and ingenuity, etc.

    Have at it,
    Ralph

So I guess I should also avoid saying, “I don’t plan to do any shooting until we’re at altitude”.

  • Thanks,

I think you’re right. Coming from traditional video camera work and only observing people with DSLRs for video, best to get my chops down first.

    Thanks again!

I usually position the key so that the subject’s nose-shadow either covers the opposite-side eye or is closer to the nose so key light hits the opposite eye. Depends on how it looks graphically – how their facial structure plays with this, and/or the content of what they’re saying. There’s a little more “ominous” when the eye is in shadow, however much it’s filled.

So, I’ll test AAC with the PC that had problems. And also check to see what player they use.

And thanks for the MediaInfo link. Tried it, looks good. Quicker than going through FCP bin info, esp if it’s not launched.

FYI, could not find it at AppleStore.

    Thanks!

October 4, 2011 at 7:35 pm in reply to: “Best universal download format?”

When you refer to H.264 .mp4, as set in Compressor, are you referring to the simple .mp4 settings I see there? There is no reference to H.264 when selecting MPEG-4 as the file format. Is this because in later MPEG-4 flavors they are “the same”?

So, by setting a selection to either H.264 or .mp4, are we essentially setting for the other as well?
