the basic idea is okay,
what puzzels me is the idea of 4 HDs and 4 SSDs ?
The raid gets its performance out of 8 working HDs or SSDs together.
Either you built up a 8 bay raid minimum Raid5 level of SSDs or HDs.
I would prefer HDs, because of costs. You won’t get that much more performance with SSD’s.
I would built one Raid level 6, using enterprise class HD’s 10TB each.

Hi Marc,

thanl you for your expertise. I’ll do, as you said. It makes sense. Working codec will be ProRes422HQ. I’ll keep the 4444 codec in mind, just in case we have some arri RAW or similar.
We use P.Tube-converter for encoding. Any other suggestions on this?

thanks for your expertise. I will do, as you said. It makes sense. I will switch to ProRes422HQ as my working codec. We have nearly no projects where a 4444 codec would make sense. However, I’ll keep it in mind. We use Pavtube for encoding – any suggestions for encoding?

At the moment I’m using 3GB/s drives,
the WD”s are 6GB/s drives.

a few days for initialising?
That is a lot. It should do the process within 48 hours.
We set up a 160 TB Raid within 48 hours. All went smooth. Software, no problem (Areca), solid netstor rack, no problems with the pcix cards, everything was acccording to the plan.
After 3-5 years I’ll write some experiences.

Hi Ed,

both raids are fine. We’ve had the same decisions to make. We have chosen a netstor TB3 with 16x10TB HGST Ultrastars plus Areca Raid card. The netstor has 3 PCIX slots on top, so we can use this for our older FC Raids.
Price is roughly the same. We spent 10.000 bucks for 160TB Raid space.

thanks for your input. I found a distributer in Germany.
The price is just under 10.000 bucks for the whole system plus two 10TB HD’s spare incl. Vat.
I think I’ll go for this solution.
