    Oh sorry,

    500 bucks is very little.
The promise pegasus 4bay starts at 1000 bucks.
Lacie or G technologie 2 bay raid with raid 0, or better 1, 8TB are around 500 bucks (Thunderbolt 2 or 3)

    cheers

  • Hi Adrian,

first of all why Raid0? I would go with Raid5.
In your case, you’ve lost all your data on your raid, so you have to built a new raid with your 4 drives.
Second: why did you buy a WDC instead of the same samsung HD’s you have already in your raid?
Perhaps it will work with the WDC, you have to try.
It is very simple, you have to perform a new disc array within your software.

    cheers

    Hi Kasey,

first of all – you have to set up your workflow. Most of the compressed stuff, cameras are working with is a non working editing codec. That’s what Bob said with mpeg4 crap. Bob is right. You have to bring all material to a decent standard.
In our case we work with ProRes422 if we work with FCP or ProRes422HQ if we edit with DaVinci (We’ve all 4k UHD material).
Your workflow might be different, if you edit with Avid.
Second thing is: We editors need a Raid System for editing in real time, especially working with 4k.
You’ve experienced this with your machinery.
What are your system specs? (Thunderbolt2,3, FC etc.)
How big are your projects? (2-4, 5-10, over 10TB per project)
How many projects at the same time?
What is your budget? (you’ve mentioned 5.000 bucks)
    How much redundancy? (Raid5, Raid6)

    cheers

    Hi folks,

we’ve worked with raid5 very successfully for years without any data loss. We have used over 10 diferent raid systems (Apple Xraid, Lacie, Sonnet, etc.). When the Raids developed more and more towards Raid6, we switched to Raid6 obviously. Now, we use Raids with a minimum of 16bay Raids. Raid6 plus spare is standard, but If I had a 4bay Raid I would use raid5.

    cheers

Raid 6 gives you enough safety instead of mirroring

    Yes it is necessary.
We’ve used Episode, but they closed it down. At the moment we use PavTube, lots of studios use Squeeze.

    Hi Kenneth,

working with AVCHD or similar compressed formats works with small projects. If a project gets bigger, it will crash at some point. So you have to figure out your workflow.
In our case we convert all UHD files (our shooting codec with different cameras) into ProRes422HQ. So the bottleneck is no longer the CPU of the computer, it is the Raid system. In our case we’ve got a large thunderbolt3 system, which works great for us. Your personal workflow might be different.

    cheers

    Hi Kevin,

a break-out card is the best option, otherwise you don’t really know what you’re doing.
The blackmagic intensity pro 4k works perfectly for us, and is quite cheap (200 bucks)

    cheers

May 11, 2018 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Choosing a Low Budget Monitor for Color grade

    Hi Ayodele,

the HP monitor has just a HD resolution, the Benq has a 2k resolution, definitely the better monitor.
So I would recommend the eizo monitor, which is expensive.
We’ve one workstation with a blackmagic Intensity Pro 4K PCIx card and a lilliput 4k 27 zoll monitor.
It is a very good monitor.
If I would go for monitoring, I would always choose a full 4k monitoring. The eizo (CG3145 ColorEdge) is 4k as well and it’s one of the best, the lilliput is very good, but not as good as the eizo.

    cheers
