Hi Cody,
I wouldn’t use WD drives. Best drives for this pupose are Hitachi deskstars to me. I would buy an icy box and put in an internal sata drive. Seagate barracudas are good as well. Our back-up system is based on this workflow. Every workstation is equipped with an USB Icy box. We just use Hitachi drives Deskstars and Ultrastars (depends on use).

We work with a USB 3.0 Icybox and Hitachi Deskstars. If you want eSata connectivity look for Raidsonic housings.

if you want a professional advice: Don’t fiddle around with drives in a fixed housing – it does no good. You are lucky you didn’t loose your drive.
Anyway – there are a lot of housings on the market, where you can swop harddrives with different connections (faster than USB).Cheers

Alex’s advice is always of great value. But I doubt that you get enough speed to handle 2k material properly. Especially when you have lots of compositing effects around it. We work mainly with ProRes422 and our SAS raid is sometimes too slow to handle multiple streams together with compositing. So real 200 MB/s is enough to handle one track but I doubt that it will handle multiple tracks with 2K in an appropriate way. I’m also concerned about the heat side inside your computer.

Hi Alex,
why do you want to go for an internal raid? Internal raids create problems after let’s say 3 years of intensive cutting. I worked for a production company which had internal raids on 10 workstations. After nearly exact 3 years one after the other went bad. I think that the cooling within the mac is not good enough for a raid.
I would go for an external 4x8gb FC raid 16/24 bay Raid 6+ spare and Hitachi Ultrastars as HDs. The Atto FC 4x8gb card is a burner. You end up with speeds over 1200MB/s. When you start editing 2K and above plus compositing you need a reliable system like this. It is definitely the most expensive solution but also the most reliable and fastest solution. These systems run for years without a flicker. The rest of your equipment is just fine. Personally I wouldn’t go for FCPX, Premiere or FCP7 are okay. We have switched to Avid MC6 from FCP7 and I have to admit Avid works fine for us.
The cheaper option would be SAS (8 or 16bay enclosure) Raid 5/6+spare and enterprise class drives. The speed is half of the FC raid. I think that you might get slight problems with a workflow above 2K.cheers

Your bottleneck is the iMac with no option for a controller card or thunderbolt. In case of speed, redundancy and reliability I wouldn’t go for a drobo. As Alex said the drobo tends to be finicky. With a lot of Data on a 8bay FW connection even with redundancy on Raid 5 I wouldn’t be happy. I think I would use a FW 800 Raid 1 enclosure (lots of brands on the market) and swop HDs when you run out of space. In this case you have at least a reliable back-up system.
On a long term run I would buy a new mac pro with SAS PCIX card plus a 8-16 bay sas chassis and 4TB Hitachi Ultrastars in it. I recommend Raid 5 (8bay) + spare/ Raid 6 (16bay) + spare.cheers

Hi Peter,
first of all – back up your data! Just use a usb drive to back it up. The rest you have to give it a try. I have no work experience with internal Raid 0 levels. Raid 0 is not a level any professional wants to use. Mostly we work on Raid 5, 6,or 50 which gives us redundancy and then still – we back it up twice, one back-up with a storage somewhere external. You haven’t got such an amount of data. One back-up should be efficient.

yeap, speed is almost the same with a 6 bay raid. Is there a huge price difference to an eight bay?
