What can we do against it?
First of all – we use the best drives you can get (enterprise class drives)
If you are able to: we use Raid6 (up to two drives can fail) plus one spare (automatically jumps in, when you have a disc failure)
Complete Data Back-up on a USB Drive.
2. Complete Data Back-up on a USB Drive stored within a different building.
External power supply (USV) so you can shut down properly your computer and raids in case of power failure.
After 5 years 24h use of the raids (around 50.000 working hours) replace your drives within a raid.
If you do it this way, a complete data loss is nearly impossible.Cheers

If you edit this way I wonder, whether you have got enough speed?
One interesting solution is Sonnet echo, which gives you the choice of up to two PCIx Slots to thunderbolt. For Example one slot for a breakout video/audio signal and one for a esata or FC connection. The speed should be greater than with USB 3.cheers

as Alex said, I would recommend Raid 5. Better data speed than raid 1, auto rebuild function, it’s only a 4 drive raid, so in case of redundancy one drive can fail – this means it’s pretty safe. More space on the raid with level 5.
You should have a seperate back-up (USB Hardrive) anyway.Cheers

If there are no specific speed requirements, the solution is more a safe back-up than a real mirroring.

I would look into a 8bay MiniSAS (Sonnet, ProAvio or similar) with Raid 6 plus spare. This would be the best solution.
The other option (cheaper) would be a 4bay or two 4bay Esata/FW raids, same brands.
You should use good drives (we recommend Hitachi Ultrastars 4TB) and Raid 5. You should be able to handle this on your own (system admin.)cheers

we are running a sonnet R400 with Hitachi Ultrastars 3Gb Raid5. It’s a good piece of Hardware. There is also a Proavio and Areca which would fit your needs (Esata, FW, USB).

I would keep the system drive and replace the three others with 3x4TB Hitachi Ultrastars (now WD). You system will provide enough power to handle DVCProHd or any other HD material except 4K.

Now your question – Best storage setup for video editing?
First of all: Raid 5 or Raid 6 plus spare gives you enough redundancy, together with a good piece of hardware.
I would go for a expandable FC solution. Sonnet, Dulce, Small Tree, or Yotta3 together with a 4x4GB or 4x8GB FC card (Atto).
For back up we use an eSata Sonnet R400, you can also use a similar brand (Areca etc.) These 4bay raid systems have an internal controller and work with eSata, FW800 and USB.
As a big Raid you can also use SAS, which is very fast and reliable (the same brands). Best harddiscs to me are Hitachi Ultrastars (now Toshiba).Cheers

I didn’t know that. Interesting. When the drives are as good as the “old” hitachis I don’t mind. The barracudas are within some of the LaCie Raids. I don’t know about the 1 TB, but the 2 TB and we’ve got one old raid with 400’s in it, work pretty solig for years now. What I always avoid are eco drives, because they don’t fit with raid systems.
