None of the known NLEs is perfect – we all know that. We hope so, but meanwhile we need to look for the best working solution. And this could be a different product for each one of us because of the different needs and approaches to projects.
I´d like to see a stable and reliable PPro – right now, and with my latest projects in mind, PPro needs really a couple of “basic” stability (codec handling, codec mixing, BMD, etc. as already named…) improvements. I do not say MC is way better and there are no issues…no, but having worked with MC over ten years now I feel it has the best basic stability (I/O, machine control, etc.).
Adobe needs to prove their Pro statements – I hope they will, but right now I don´t have the time to wait until april/may when possibly the next update will come. -
Today was another day of PPro hell.
Working with a rendered file out of AE (with Animation codec) PPro didn´t play audio sync any more. After a restart the playback was correct again.
Pulling the Animation codec file in a PAL 25p Blackmagic Preset sequence the video looked like you´ve used a metal brush on it…
I have no idea why PPro produces such weird output, has obviously problems with some sort of codec – and that is what I really don´t get at all. From my point of view, nothing really special was done within this project. But some codecs really don´t look good in the one and other sequence format (like Animation in Blackmagic). As well as downscaling from a HD timeline to a SD timeline…uaargh. It´s really more than the time that Adobe needs to practice what they´ve preached mid 2011.
I´m really short about to upgrade my old Avid license.

I started with preset Digital SLR 1080p25.
Exporting it as ProRes HQ for Color. From there export as ProRes HQ.
Back in PPro importing the graded material in a Blackmagic Uncompressed preset. Still 1080.
Then into AE, back to PPro.So, nothing weird from my point of view – except some of the results.

Hi Jeff,
yes, I´m working on a Mac.
The source format is 25p and there is no 24p-30fps pull down (PAL Land over here :-)).
The original sequence format was a Canon based preset (1080p25).

Todd, I deleted that file as described but it doesn´t have no effect on playback/monitoring. It still stops after some seconds.

Thank you, Todd! I´ll try that.

Tom, that is exactly it! Couldn´t have said it better!

I´m sending bug reports and feature request regularly 🙂

Thank you, Carlos!
I think the more people state their issues the greater the possibility something changes.
In general I feel we´re right at the point where Adobe needs to prove their PRO-Commitment which they called out loud not long ago. And it´s not only about the basic 1×1 – monitoring, tape support, etc.
From my point of view Premiere 5.5 had the right basis evolving to a solid tool – and reading all the “we do listen” statements from Adobe I went to Premiere instead of MC.
And right now – as MC 6 is out – I want that evolution and that “we listened” prove even faster.Greetings

Todd, I have PPro 5.5.2 and the BMD driver 8.6.1 installed – and playback stops after some seconds.
